Chapter 26 - THE LAST TIME I HEARD THE RECORDING

Two years after Grace’s birth, Teresa asked whether she could close her copy of the investigation file after retention requirements were satisfied.
I had my own preserved legal copy.
I listened to Oscar’s recording once more.
Not all eighteen minutes.
Just the beginning.
Once she has the baby, she’s going to panic and refuse everything.
I paused.
The sentence no longer made my chest seize.
Because I knew what happened next.
I did refuse.
Not because I panicked.
Because no was the correct answer.
Oscar’s greatest assumption had been that my refusal was a temporary symptom.
Something money, fear, exhaustion, family pressure, or motherhood would cure.
It was not.
I deleted the convenience copy from my phone.
