Chapter 1 - THE MARK ON THE RABBITThe slap cracked through Moretti Hall like a gunshot.

Isabella Bennett’s cheek struck the cold marble wall. For one breathless second, every guest beneath the chandeliers stopped moving.
Twelve of the most powerful crime families on the East Coast had gathered inside Alessandro Moretti’s estate that evening. Men in black suits stood beside senators, business owners, judges, and women glittering in diamonds. Armed guards watched the doors while a string quartet played near the grand staircase.
And Isabella, the quiet housekeeper who had spent the past year serving them without complaint, stood humiliated beside a spreading glass of orange juice.
Vivian DeLuca loomed over her in a red gown.
“You’re only a housekeeper.”
Isabella touched her burning cheek but did not answer.
The spilled juice had come from Vivian’s glass. She had knocked it from a waiter’s tray, then ordered Isabella to kneel and clean the Persian rug before the guests noticed.
They had noticed everything.
What none of them expected was the barefoot three-year-old racing from the service corridor.
Emma clutched a faded blue wool rabbit against her chest. She threw herself between Isabella and Vivian, planting both tiny feet on the marble.
“Don’t you dare order my mommy around!”
A few guests almost smiled.
Vivian did not.
She lifted one hand again.
The music stopped.
Alessandro Moretti stepped from the grand hall.
He wore black from collar to shoes, with no visible weapon and no need to display one. Thirty-eight years old, feared across five states, Alessandro had ended three wars among the Twelve Families without ever raising his voice in public.
He placed his wineglass on a silver tray.
“Apologize to Mrs. Bennett.”
Vivian stared at him.
“You cannot be serious.”
“I did not repeat myself.”
Something in his expression made two DeLuca guards shift backward.
Vivian’s lips tightened.
“I apologize.”
The words contained no remorse.
Alessandro ignored her and knelt before Emma.
The change in him was startling. The cold authority vanished from his eyes, replaced by something almost gentle.
Emma hugged the rabbit tighter.
“Mr. Bunny says you look sad.”
Alessandro’s hand paused near the toy.
The rabbit’s left ear had folded forward. Beneath the blue wool was a small black symbol stitched with thick thread.
Three thorns around a broken crown.
Alessandro stopped breathing.
He touched the mark once.
Then he rose slowly.
“Where did she get this rabbit?”
Isabella’s humiliation disappeared beneath sudden fear.
“It belonged to my husband.”
“Daniel Bennett?”
“Yes.”
“Daniel died three years ago.”
“That rabbit disappeared the night he died.”
Across the hall, an elderly man dropped his champagne glass.
Another guest whispered a prayer.
Every armed Moretti guard reached inside his jacket.
The black stitched symbol belonged to the Briar Circle, a secret faction accused of murdering Alessandro’s father and almost destroying the Twelve Families seventeen years earlier.
Everyone associated with the symbol had supposedly been executed.
Alessandro looked toward the twelve family tables.
“Seal the estate.”
Steel bolts locked the front doors.
Vivian stepped away from Emma.
Her face had lost all color.
Alessandro noticed.
“You recognize the mark.”
“No.”
“You were staring at it before I touched it.”
Vivian glanced toward her father’s empty chair.
Vincent DeLuca had left the hall minutes before the slap.
Alessandro’s head of security approached with a tablet.
“Mr. DeLuca’s vehicle just crossed the east gate.”
“He left without permission?”
“Yes.”
Isabella lifted Emma into her arms.
“She found the rabbit in her room this morning.”
“That’s impossible,” Alessandro said.
Emma looked over Isabella’s shoulder toward the dark service corridor.
“The old man gave it back.”
“What old man?” Isabella asked.
“The one who knows Daddy.”
Before Emma could point, every chandelier in Moretti Hall went dark.
A single gunshot sounded from somewhere beneath the estate.
When the emergency lights came on, Vivian was gone.

So was the blue rabbit.
👉 The stitched mark exposed an enemy believed dead—but someone inside the locked estate had already stolen the only evidence.
