Chapter 9 - THE WOMAN WHO BUILT SAINT ORISONEmergency lights illuminated the tower room.

Elena Moretti stood beside the window.

She was in her early sixties, elegant despite years in hiding, with silver threaded through dark hair. Alessandro recognized the shape of her eyes from the portraits in the chapel.

He did not lower his weapon.

“You let me bury you.”

“You were safer believing I was dead.”

“That sentence has destroyed every family in this house.”

Elena looked almost proud.

“You understand faster than Carlo did.”

Alessandro’s anger became colder.

“You created Saint Orison.”

“I created exits.”

“You created false deaths.”

“For women whose husbands would never let them leave.”

“You created locked rooms.”

“Later.”

“You watched Sofia use them.”

“I was trying to recover control.”

“From a tower inside my estate?”

Elena’s expression hardened.

“Your father placed guards outside this room for twelve years.”

Carlo had hidden her?

The family history fractured again.

Elena explained that Saint Orison began as a rescue system. She and Antonio Bellandi moved threatened spouses and children into protected identities.

Carlo supported them until leaders began accusing the network of stealing heirs and witnesses.

He demanded that all names be turned over to the Twelve Families.

Elena refused.

Sofia offered a compromise: controlled placements overseen by the council.

Instead, Sofia sold access.

Carlo later imprisoned Elena in the north tower to prevent her from releasing the Black Ledger publicly.

“Carlo tried to dismantle the network,” Alessandro said.

“He wanted to return people to the families they escaped.”

Below them, Carlo’s tablet remained the only way he could answer.

Every witness carried part of the truth and part of the crime.

“Why are you free now?” Alessandro asked.

“Daniel opened the inner lock three years ago.”

Daniel had met Elena before disappearing.

She recruited him to expose Sofia.

He agreed, then discovered Elena also intended to use Emma’s Bellandi bloodline to seize the complete archive.

“You gave the rabbit to Emma?”

“Yes.”

“You used a three-year-old.”

“I returned what belonged to her.”

“You placed a transmitter in her toy and sent her into a hall full of armed criminals.”

“I knew you would protect a child.”

“You did not know.”

Elena’s calm slipped.

“I knew my son.”

“No. You knew the boy you abandoned.”

That struck her.

Alessandro opened the tower door.

Isabella, Daniel, and Emma waited outside with guards.

Elena looked at Isabella.

“You have Antonio’s eyes.”

“You knew my father?”

“I loved him.”

Daniel turned toward her.

“You said Antonio was only your partner.”

Elena looked at Emma.

The child hugged the rabbit against Isabella’s shoulder.

Antonio Bellandi and Elena Moretti had shared more than a protection network.

Isabella understood before Elena spoke.

“My mother knew,” Isabella whispered.

“Your mother agreed to hide you.”

“Was Antonio my father?”

“Yes.”

“Was he Emma’s grandfather only through me?”

Elena hesitated.

Alessandro noticed.

“What are you hiding?”

Elena walked toward a sealed cabinet.

Inside were family records preserved before the Bellandi purge.

One file contained Isabella’s birth certificate.

Antonio Bellandi was listed as her legal father.

The biological field named another man.

Carlo Moretti.

Alessandro stared at Isabella.

She stepped backward.

“That would make us—”

“Half siblings,” Elena said.

Daniel shook his head.

“The record could be forged.”

“It is authentic.”

Isabella looked toward Emma.

The child carried both Bellandi and Moretti blood regardless of which paternal record was true.

Her existence could unite the two rival claims to the Black Ledger.

She had not been chosen because she happened to own the rabbit.

She had been identified before birth as the person who could legally inherit both hidden networks.

Then Elena looked at Alessandro.

“Carlo never knew whether Isabella was his child.”

“Why?”

“Because Antonio protected her as his own.”

Alessandro’s voice became dangerous.

“And you sent her into my house as a servant.”

“I needed to see whether you would recognize blood before status.”

Isabella stepped toward Elena.

“You let Vivian strike me to test him?”

“I did not order the slap.”

“But you expected humiliation to reveal character.”

Elena did not deny it.

👉 Isabella learned she might be Alessandro’s sister—and Elena had arranged the entire evening to test whether he would defend her.
