Chapter 13 - THE RED DOUBLEAdriana Moretti had been declared dead at age nine after a swimming accident.

Sofia secretly moved her into Saint Orison and trained her to imitate women from powerful families. She appeared at medical appointments, court hearings, and private meetings whenever the real person refused to cooperate.
Vivian was one of several identities she wore.
Adriana’s visits kept Cecilia compliant. Cecilia believed her younger sister had chosen the family over her.
The deception preserved isolation more effectively than locked doors.
Vivian struck the glass.
“You stole my face.”
Adriana smiled.
“You used it so poorly.”
Alessandro ordered technicians to shut down the transfer system.
Adriana had already severed outside control.
Ambulance bays opened beneath the facility. Drivers in Saint Orison uniforms began loading sedated patients.
Isabella used Daniel’s original building architecture to locate a manual override in the central nurses’ station.
The route required crossing the observation wing.
Adriana watched them through every camera.
“You were always supposed to come here, Isabella,” she said over the speakers. “My mother believed humiliation would move you faster than threats.”
“Did she order Vivian to slap me?”
“No. Vivian’s cruelty was convenient.”
The distinction mattered.
Sofia designed the conditions.
Vivian made the choice.
Adriana released armed guards into the corridor.
Alessandro’s team held them back while Isabella and Daniel reached the nurses’ station.
Emma and Lily remained with federal agents inside a secured room.
Isabella found the manual controls.
The transfer doors required a founder code.
Elena had it.
She was still at Moretti Hall.
Alessandro contacted her.
“Give us the code.”
“If I do, Adriana releases every protected identity to the families.”
“She is moving children now.”
“And I am preserving thousands.”
“You are choosing records over people in front of you.”
Elena’s silence confirmed it.
Alessandro looked toward Isabella.
“Can you bypass it?”
“Not before the vehicles leave.”
Daniel opened the electrical panel.
“If we kill the facility power, the mechanical doors fail open.”
“Life-support equipment fails too,” Isabella said.
“Backup power activates after twenty seconds.”
“Twenty seconds is a long time for some patients.”
Again, no clean option.
Naomi—wrong story, don't. Isabella looked at the medical monitor showing occupied critical-care rooms.
She redirected portable batteries to the three most vulnerable patients before Daniel cut the central power.
Darkness fell.
The ambulance gates stopped halfway.
Federal agents pulled patients out.
Backup generators activated seventeen seconds later.
No one died.
Adriana lost access to the transfer system.
She fled toward the roof.
Vivian followed.
On the rooftop, Adriana removed the final pieces of the disguise.
Without Vivian’s face, she looked younger and frightened.
“Mother will kill me if I surrender.”
Vivian stopped several feet away.
“My father used the same sentence.”
“You obeyed him.”
“Yes.”
“And now you judge me?”
“No. I know exactly what fear can turn into.”
Adriana looked over the edge.
Vivian held out one hand.
“Come back.”
For a moment, Adriana reached toward her.
Then a shot struck the rooftop railing.
Sofia stood on the neighboring bell tower holding a rifle.
She had escaped Moretti Hall.
Adriana stared at her mother.
Sofia aimed again.
Not at Vivian.
At her own daughter.
Alessandro’s guard returned fire toward the tower, forcing Sofia down.
Vivian dragged Adriana behind the stone ledge.
Adriana began sobbing.
“She never intended me to survive exposure.”
She handed Vivian a sealed drive.
It contained the complete replacement-identity program.
The newest profile was already active.
ISABELLA BENNETT—SUBSTITUTE DEPLOYED TO MORETTI HALL.
The real Isabella stood at Saint Orison.
