Chapter 3 - THE MESSAGE INSIDE THE EARThe missing rabbit was found inside a dumbwaiter shaft between the kitchen and second floor.

A guard heard its music box playing behind the wall.
The toy had been cut open along its back. The cotton filling was scattered through the shaft, but whoever searched it had left in a hurry.
Alessandro carried it into the study inside a clear evidence pouch.
Emma reached for it.
“Mr. Bunny is hurt.”
Isabella knelt beside her.
“We’ll fix him.”
Alessandro examined the black symbol under a magnifying lamp.
The thread was old.
Faded blood stained the base of one thorn.
His father, Carlo Moretti, had carried a handkerchief embroidered with the same mark on the night he was assassinated.
The council believed the Briar Circle had placed it on his body.
Isabella opened a sewing kit.
“May I?”
Alessandro handed her the toy.
She carefully removed three stitches from the folded ear. Inside was a thin metal capsule no longer than a matchstick.
Vivian stared.
“My father never mentioned that.”
Isabella twisted the capsule open.
A micro-storage wafer slid into her palm.
Alessandro’s technicians connected it to an isolated computer.
The first file was an audio recording.
Static filled the room.
Then Daniel Bennett spoke.
“Bella, if Emma has the rabbit, I failed to come home again.”
Isabella gripped the edge of the desk.
Emma smiled at the sound.
“Daddy.”
Daniel continued.
“The Briar mark does not identify the traitor. It identifies the witness. Your father created it so the families would know which evidence had never been copied.”
Alessandro leaned toward the screen.
“The symbol was Bellandi?”
“Yes,” Isabella whispered. “My father used it on private ledgers.”
The history accepted by the Twelve Families was already collapsing.
Daniel’s message continued.
“Carlo Moretti did not die because Antonio Bellandi betrayed him. They were working together. Both discovered that someone inside the council had been selling children, witnesses, and protected relatives to private detention networks.”
Vivian covered her mouth.
Alessandro’s voice became low.
“My father would never have hidden that from me.”
“You were twenty-one,” Isabella said.
“He taught me everything.”
“Powerful fathers often teach their heirs only the truth they can survive.”
Alessandro looked at her sharply but did not argue.
Daniel named no traitor.
Instead, he gave instructions.
The rabbit contained a second compartment that would open only when placed beside a Moretti family signet ring.
Alessandro removed the heavy black ring from his hand.
He pressed it against the stitched ear.
A tiny magnetic lock released.
Inside the rabbit’s head was a narrow paper strip covered in numbers.
Isabella recognized financial account codes.
Twelve accounts.
One for each family.
Every account sent monthly payments into the same foundation:
The Saint Orison Children’s Trust.
Vivian’s face changed.
“My mother runs that charity.”
“Your mother died six years ago,” Alessandro said.
Vivian looked down.
“That’s what my father told the public.”
The account records continued until the previous week.
Someone had been using the DeLuca matriarch’s identity long after her supposed death.
The final line contained a message:
THE HOUSEKEEPER OPENS THE DOOR. THE CHILD CHOOSES THE KING.
Alessandro looked toward Emma.
She sat on the carpet, trying to tuck the rabbit’s cotton back inside its torn body.
“What does that mean?” he asked.
Isabella shook her head.
The storage wafer contained one last video.
Daniel appeared inside a concrete room. His face was bruised, but he was alive.
A calendar behind him showed the current month.
“Isabella,” he said, “do not let Alessandro take Emma beneath the chapel.”
The screen flickered.
A woman entered behind Daniel wearing a dark veil.
She placed one hand on his shoulder.
Alessandro recognized her immediately.
“Aunt Sofia.”
His father’s sister had arranged Isabella’s employment, managed Moretti Hall, and left the estate that morning claiming illness.
Sofia looked directly into the camera.
