Chapter 8 - THE CHILD WHO STOPPED THE GASRed warning lights flooded the chapel chamber.

Metal vents opened along the floor.

Alessandro’s guards rushed toward the doors, but stone barriers dropped across both exits.

Sofia backed away from Carlo.

“You foolish girl.”

Vivian pulled at the wheelchair cable.

“I’m done letting you keep my sister alive just enough to control me.”

A low hiss came from the vents.

Daniel covered Emma’s mouth with his sleeve.

Isabella seized the rabbit and pressed its stitched ear against Carlo’s monitor.

Nothing happened.

“The signet ring,” Daniel said.

Alessandro removed his ring and placed it beside the black symbol.

The rabbit’s hidden transmitter activated.

A woman’s recorded voice spoke from inside the toy.

“Carlo, if you can hear this, release the Briar override.”

Alessandro recognized his mother, Elena Moretti.

She had died when he was eight.

Or he had been told she died.

Carlo’s fingers moved weakly toward the chair’s armrest.

Sofia lunged to stop him.

Vivian blocked her.

The women struck the railing and fell against the wall.

Carlo pressed a recessed button.

The vents closed.

Fresh-air fans engaged.

The barriers lifted.

Alessandro’s men restrained Sofia before she reached the escape passage.

Cecilia’s glass room opened.

Vivian ran to her sister.

Cecilia flinched at first, conditioned by years of controlled contact. Then she recognized Vivian’s voice and collapsed into her arms.

No one in the chamber mistook reunion for healing.

Cecilia had lost fourteen years.

Vivian had participated in Sofia’s plan to recover her.

Both truths remained.

Alessandro knelt beside Carlo.

“Why didn’t you come home?”

Carlo’s damaged throat produced only air.

Daniel found a communication tablet attached beneath the chair. Carlo could type using one finger.

Slowly, letters appeared.

SOFIA DID NOT BEGIN IT.

Alessandro looked toward his aunt.

“Who did?”

Carlo typed again.

ELENA.

Alessandro stared at the rabbit.

His mother’s voice had just saved them.

Carlo continued.

YOUR MOTHER CREATED SAINT ORISON. SOFIA TOOK CONTROL AFTER SHE DISAPPEARED.

“Disappeared?”

Alessandro had watched Elena’s funeral procession as a child.

The coffin remained closed because of a supposed car fire.

Another death without a body.

Isabella opened the remaining files inside the rabbit.

A map appeared, showing medical centers, hidden residences, and financial routes across the country.

At the center was Moretti Hall.

Saint Orison had been designed from the estate outward.

Daniel explained what he had discovered.

Elena believed crime families needed a private system to protect wives, children, and witnesses from internal violence. She created safe identities and hidden residences.

At first, the network rescued people.

Then family leaders began using it to erase inconvenient relatives.

Sofia transformed protection into confinement.

Carlo and Antonio tried to dismantle it.

Elena vanished before choosing a side publicly.

Alessandro stood.

“Where is my mother?”

Sofia laughed from the floor.

“You think I imprisoned everyone. Some people entered Saint Orison because your father frightened them more than I did.”

Carlo struck the tablet.

A final location appeared.

NORTH TOWER—ROOM 13.

Moretti Hall’s north tower had been sealed since Elena’s death.

Alessandro ordered it opened.

Inside Room 13, guards found recent clothing, medication, surveillance photographs, and a woman’s handwritten journal.

The final page had been written that afternoon.

Emma carries Antonio’s key. Alessandro carries Carlo’s. Isabella carries mine. The families will finally open the Black Ledger tonight.

Beneath the sentence was Elena Moretti’s signature.

A second line had been added moments earlier.

My son has entered the tower.

Alessandro looked behind him.

The door slammed shut.

A woman’s voice came through the darkness.
