Chapter 2 - THE HOUSEKEEPER’S REAL NAMEAlessandro’s guards divided the estate into sealed zones.

No guest was allowed to leave the grand hall. Each member of the Twelve Families surrendered phones, weapons, and car keys while security teams searched the corridors.

Isabella remained beside Alessandro’s private study with Emma held tightly against her chest.

The child had begun crying for the rabbit.

“It’s Daddy’s,” she whispered. “He said to keep it safe.”

Isabella looked at her.

“When did Daddy say that?”

“Today.”

The answer chilled her.

Emma had been six months old when Daniel disappeared. She knew him only through photographs and bedtime stories.

Alessandro closed the study door.

“You said the rabbit vanished when your husband died.”

“His car was found burning beside the Delaware River. Police recovered his wallet and wedding ring, but not his body.”

“And you accepted that he was dead?”

“The authorities did.”

“That wasn’t my question.”

Isabella looked toward Emma.

“No.”

Alessandro studied her more closely.

She had always seemed deliberately forgettable inside his estate. Plain black uniforms. Hair pinned simply. Eyes lowered when powerful men entered a room.

Tonight, she had not cried after Vivian struck her.

She had watched the exits.

“You aren’t a housekeeper,” he said.

“I clean your rooms.”

“You also photographed the rug before touching the juice.”

Isabella’s hand moved toward the pocket of her uniform.

Alessandro had noticed.

“You checked whether the glass broke toward Emma or away from her. You counted the guards when the lights failed. And you recognized the sound beneath the estate as a suppressed handgun.”

Emma looked between them.

Isabella set her daughter gently on the sofa.

“My name before I married Daniel was Isabella Bell.”

Alessandro’s eyes hardened.

“Bell?”

“It was shortened.”

“From what?”

She hesitated.

“Bellandi.”

The name carried the weight of a death sentence.

The Bellandi family had once held the thirteenth seat among the Eastern syndicates. They managed banks, shipping insurance, and private ledgers documenting every alliance among the families.

Seventeen years earlier, they were accused of betraying the council to federal investigators.

The Twelve Families retaliated in a single night.

No Bellandi heir was supposed to have survived.

Alessandro moved closer.

“You are a Bellandi.”

“My mother changed our names when I was five.”

“Who was your father?”

“Antonio Bellandi.”

Alessandro knew the name.

Antonio had been the family accountant who allegedly stole the Black Ledger and triggered the purge.

“He was executed in New Jersey.”

“That’s what your father told everyone.”

Alessandro’s jaw tightened.

“You are standing inside my house under a false identity while carrying the bloodline accused of killing mine.”

“I came because your aunt offered me employment after Daniel disappeared.”

“Aunt Sofia knew your identity?”

“I don’t know.”

“You expect me to believe that?”

“I expect nothing from you.”

The study door opened.

Two guards dragged Vivian inside. Her red gown had torn at the shoulder, and one heel was missing.

They found her inside the old wine cellar trying to open a service gate.

She did not have the rabbit.

“I was frightened,” she said.

Alessandro looked at her.

“Of a stuffed toy?”

“Of what it means.”

“Then tell us.”

Vivian turned toward Isabella.

“Ask the housekeeper why Daniel Bennett met my father every month before he died.”

Isabella’s expression changed.

Vivian saw it.

“You didn’t know.”

“What meetings?”

“Daniel worked for the Briar Circle.”

“No.”

“My father has photographs.”

“Your father ran from the estate.”

“Because he knew Alessandro would kill him before hearing the truth.”

Alessandro’s security chief entered carrying a small black device recovered beneath the Persian rug.

It was a transmitter.

Someone had hidden it directly under the juice spill.

The rabbit’s stitched symbol had activated the device when Emma entered the corridor.

The grand hall had been broadcasting every conversation to an external receiver.

Isabella looked toward Vivian.

“You spilled the juice over it deliberately.”

Vivian said nothing.

Alessandro stepped closer.

“Who told you where to drop the glass?”

Her eyes filled with fear.

“A man calling himself Daniel Bennett.”

Emma looked up from the sofa.

“That’s Daddy.”

👉 Vivian claimed Daniel was alive and directing events from outside the estate—but Isabella had not heard her husband’s voice in three years.
