Chapter 11 - DANIEL’S SECOND SECRETAlessandro did not attempt to destroy the record.

He ordered every Moretti authorization preserved.

“My signature appears. Investigators will determine what I knew.”

Elena stared at him.

“You would surrender your authority over administrative negligence?”

“Children disappeared through contracts I approved.”

“You did not know.”

“I benefited from not knowing.”

Isabella heard the difference.

Daniel looked away.

She noticed.

“What did you sign?”

He did not answer.

“Daniel.”

He opened a hidden folder on the storage wafer.

Three years earlier, while investigating Saint Orison, Daniel authorized an emergency transfer for one protected witness. He believed the woman faced immediate danger from her husband.

The receiving facility belonged to Elena’s network.

The transfer packet concealed three additional names.

Daniel’s signature moved four people.

One was Cecilia DeLuca.

One was Carlo Moretti.

The fourth was a child identified only as E.B.-0.

Isabella felt cold.

“What child?”

“I never found out.”

“You signed without knowing?”

“I had six minutes before the system alerted Sofia.”

“You decided the risk for four people.”

“Yes.”

He had made the same compromise he condemned in others.

Daniel’s guilt did not erase the years he spent imprisoned.

His imprisonment did not erase the decision.

Emma touched his bound-wrist scars.

“You came back.”

Daniel looked at her.

“I should have come back sooner.”

The E.B.-0 file contained pediatric medical data and photographs hidden behind encryption.

Isabella used the Bellandi key.

A baby appeared on-screen.

Female.

Approximately six months old at intake.

Transfer date: four years earlier.

Before Emma was born.

The initials could mean Evelyn Bellandi, Elena Bennett, or another constructed name.

The child had been placed under Daniel’s authorization and later moved by Sofia.

“Why was she connected to you?” Isabella asked.

Daniel’s face showed genuine confusion.

“I don’t know.”

Elena reached for the tablet.

Alessandro blocked her.

“You recognize her.”

Elena looked toward Isabella.

“The child was created from preserved Bellandi embryos.”

Isabella stepped backward.

“What embryos?”

Antonio Bellandi had funded a fertility program to protect the family bloodline after the purge began. Samples from several relatives were stored under false names.

Sofia later gained access.

She used the embryos to create heirs she could control.

E.B.-0 was one of them.

Emma may not have been the only surviving Bellandi child.

Elena claimed she did not know the girl’s current location.

Sofia laughed from her guarded chair.

“Everyone says they do not know when knowing becomes expensive.”

Alessandro turned toward her.

“Where is the child?”

“Saint Orison.”

“Which facility?”

“The one Daniel designed.”

Daniel’s face changed.

Before becoming an investigator, he had worked as a cybersecurity architect for a private hospital chain. One of his old secure buildings had later been purchased through a shell company.

He unknowingly designed the digital prison used by Sofia.

The location was twenty miles from the estate.

Alessandro ordered a rescue operation.

Sofia called after them.

“You may find the child. But when Isabella sees her, the housekeeper will finally understand why Daniel chose disappearance over returning home.”

Isabella looked at her husband.

He shook his head.

“I don’t know what she means.”

Emma’s rabbit began playing a lullaby.

Daniel recognized it.
