Chapter 15 - THE KING AT THE THIRTEENTH DOORSofia released the detonator.

Nothing happened.
Daniel had found the explosive circuit through the chapel schematics and disconnected it before Isabella returned.
For the first time, Sofia looked genuinely surprised.
Alessandro’s guards restrained her.
No final arrest settled the matter. Sofia’s attorneys, bribed judges, hidden allies, and years of forged identities still stood between evidence and justice.
But she no longer controlled the room.
Isabella opened Emma’s envelope fully.
Inside were three photographs.
The first showed Carlo Moretti at the service gate that morning, handing the rabbit to Emma.
The second showed Daniel meeting Carlo during his investigation.
The third showed Elena and Carlo together inside Saint Orison only two months earlier.
Elena stared.
“I haven’t seen him in seventeen years.”
The timestamp was authenticated.
Either her memory had been altered, or another woman had lived under her identity.
Every face had become uncertain.
Every death useful.
Every reunion vulnerable to fabrication.
Daniel removed a tiny audio strip from the envelope.
Carlo’s voice filled the chapel.
“Alessandro, Isabella, if you reached the vault together, then Sofia, Elena, Vincent, and the Twelve have all revealed the limits of their loyalty.”
Alessandro looked toward the weakened man in the wheelchair.
The patient began trembling.
Medical staff removed his throat tube.
Beneath the adhesive around his face was the edge of a prosthetic.
They carefully peeled it away.
The man was not Carlo.
He was Gideon Ross, a former Moretti accountant declared dead after testifying against Sofia.
He had been forced to wear Carlo’s identity for years.
Alessandro turned toward Elena.
“You knew?”
“No.”
Sofia smiled from the floor.
“She knew when it benefited her and forgot when it did not.”
Carlo’s recording continued.
“I helped create the Briar pact. I helped conceal Saint Orison when I believed secrecy protected families. I allowed Sofia to build control from my silence. I am not the innocent father history will want me to become.”
Isabella heard the rarest thing in the entire archive.
A powerful man refusing to clean himself inside his own confession.
“I left the estate because Vale—” No, avoid cross-story names. “Because the council would have used Alessandro to reach me. I returned when Daniel showed me that Emma carried the last Bellandi key.”
Daniel looked down.
“You worked with him,” Isabella said.
“Yes.”
“You knew he was alive.”
“For six months.”
“And hid it.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Carlo said appearing publicly would trigger the destruction of every Saint Orison site.”
“You believed him.”
“I verified three locations. Not all.”
“You chose secrecy again.”
“Yes.”
Daniel no longer asked her to forgive the choices he made without her.
The recording directed them toward the thirteenth door at the far end of the vault.
Emma’s brass key opened it.
Beyond was a narrow corridor leading beneath the estate gardens.
Fresh footprints crossed the dust.
Carlo had been there recently.
Isabella, Alessandro, Daniel, and federal investigators followed the passage to an underground command room.
Banks of live screens showed every Saint Orison property, every family table, the hospital where Cecilia recovered, and Emma’s bedroom above the service wing.
Carlo had watched all of them.
A chair faced the screens.
Still warm.
On the desk lay a wineglass matching Alessandro’s.
Beside it was a current medical report.
EMMA BENNETT—PATERNITY VERIFIED.
Daniel stopped.
Isabella reached for the paper.
The listed father was not Daniel.
It was not Alessandro.
The name had been blacked out.
A second page showed a genetic link between Emma and the Moretti line stronger than Carlo’s possible relationship to Isabella could explain.
Alessandro looked toward Daniel.
“Did you know?”
“No.”
Isabella turned toward the corridor behind them.
A door closed softly.
The monitors changed simultaneously.
Carlo Moretti appeared live from another room.
He looked older, but strong.
Emma sat beside him holding an undamaged blue rabbit.
Isabella looked down.
Her daughter had been with Daniel at the chapel entrance moments earlier.
Daniel spun around.
The child beside him was gone.
Carlo touched Emma’s shoulder gently.
“She is safe for now.”
Isabella moved toward the screen.
“Give me my daughter.”
“You still believe she was brought here because of the ledger.”
“What else?”
Carlo looked toward Alessandro.
“The child chooses the king.”
Alessandro’s face hardened.
“I will not rule through a child.”
“That is not what the phrase means.”
Carlo lifted the paternity report.
“Emma identifies which man has been ruling under a stolen bloodline.”
One of the twelve family screens opened.
A hidden witness entered the grand hall.
He wore Alessandro’s face.
Same age.
Same scar near the eyebrow.
Same Moretti signet ring.
The real Alessandro stared at him.
Carlo continued.
“One of you was raised as my son.”
The second Alessandro looked directly into the camera.
“The other was raised to replace him.”
Emma hugged the rabbit and whispered something into Carlo’s ear.
His expression changed.
He turned toward someone entering behind him.
“No,” he said. “You were supposed to remain dead.”
A woman stepped into view wearing Isabella’s face.
Not a prosthetic.
Not makeup.
The same childhood scar beneath the chin.
She placed one hand on Emma’s other shoulder.
Then she looked into the camera.
“Isabella, Daniel never married the Bellandi daughter.”
The command-room doors locked.
Every screen went black except one.
A live feed showed the thirteenth chair beginning to turn by itself.
Someone was sitting in it.
And from the darkness came Antonio Bellandi’s voice:
“Bring me both of my daughters.”
May you like
