He had reason to be terrified.
He did not have permission to strike me.
Officer Mara’s body camera captured most of it.
Daniel entered a misdemeanor diversion arrangement later.
Domestic-violence intervention.
Anger management.
Community service.
No criminal mythology.
No prison for one slap under these circumstances.
But no free pass either.
When he apologized properly, he said:
“I decided fear made me entitled to punish you before I knew anything.”
That sentence mattered.
Our marriage survived.
Barely.

Not because apology erased it.
Because his behavior afterward changed long enough for words to regain meaning.
