Chapter 5 - LILY COMES OUTThe surgery took almost three hours.
Dr. Cole and pediatric surgeon Dr. Priya Shah met me afterward.
Thirty-six magnets had been removed.
Not all from the stomach.
Some had already passed farther.
Several had attracted across bowel loops.
There were pressure injuries.
Two small perforations required repair.
No large section of intestine had to be removed.
No widespread infection.
Dr. Shah said:
“We got to her in time.”
I started crying so hard I could not answer.
In time.
Not early.
In time.
Lily went to pediatric intensive care overnight for monitoring.
She was stable.
That word became oxygen.
Dr. Shah also corrected something important.
“Rachel, I want to be precise about what was said earlier.”
I looked at her.
“Dr. Cole expressed a strong concern about forced ingestion.”
“Yes.”
“An X-ray alone cannot tell us who put magnets into a child’s mouth or whether every magnet was forced.”
I swallowed.
“But thirty-six—”
“Thirty-six is extremely concerning. So are the video and Lily’s injuries around her mouth that we documented. But medical imaging does not identify an offender.”
“Understood.”
