Chapter 23 - DANIEL AND MEDaniel slept in the guest room for five months.

Then an apartment for three.

Our marriage did not survive because I felt sorry for him.

It survived because he stopped demanding an ending.

He did individual therapy.

Completed his court requirements.

Never once said:

You know I would never really hurt you.

Good.

Because he had.

One evening he said:

“I spent my whole childhood watching my mother decide who was right before hearing what happened.”

I looked at him.

“That sounds familiar.”

He winced.

“Yes.”

He had entered the hospital, seen Lily’s X-ray, and immediately decided I must have failed catastrophically.

Then used his hand before information.

He had repeated Patricia’s pattern at higher speed.

That realization changed him more than the diversion course did.

We reconciled slowly.

Not because of Lily.
