Chapter 22 - LILY LEARNS WHAT A MAGNET ISMonths later, Lily found a refrigerator magnet on the floor.

She screamed.
Not loud.
Sharp.
I ran.
“What?”
She pointed.
Magnet.
Cheap souvenir shaped like Nebraska.
My heart dropped.
I picked it up.
Then stopped.
Her therapist had warned us not to turn magnets into radioactive objects.
“Do you want me to move it?”
“Yes.”
“Okay.”
I put it on the refrigerator.
Not trash.
Visible.
Safe.
Lily stared.
“It won’t go in my tummy?”
“No.”
“Unless I eat it?”
“Correct.”
“I’m not.”
“Excellent plan.”
She looked suspicious.
Then:
“Can I touch it?”
“Yes.”
She touched the edge.
Pulled her finger back.
Nothing happened.
