Chapter 2 - THE SURGERY CONSENTDr. Cole did not let us continue watching.

That made me furious.
Then he said:
“Rachel, your daughter may have bowel trapped between magnets.”
Everything else vanished.
High-powered magnets are not like coins.
One object may pass.
Multiple magnets can attract each other through different loops of intestine.
Tissue caught between them can lose blood supply.
Pressure injury.
Perforation.
Infection.
Words no parent wants attached to a five-year-old.
The pediatric surgery team arrived.
Another X-ray.
Bloodwork.
Exam.
Lily’s abdomen had become distended and tender.
She had already vomited three times before we came to the hospital.
I had waited too long.
That was the thought that began repeating.
I had waited too long.
The previous afternoon she said her stomach hurt.
I thought constipation.
That night she refused dinner.
I thought stomach virus.
At 2:00 a.m. she vomited.
At 5:40 she cried when I touched her abdomen.
That was when we came.
If I had brought her sooner—
The surgeon interrupted my spiral.
“Mrs. Bennett.”
“Yes.”
“We need you with us.”
I signed consent with a hand that barely worked.
Daniel was no longer in the room.
Police had removed him to the hallway after the slap.
Patricia had disappeared too.
I did not ask where.
There was no time.
They wheeled Lily away at 10:18 a.m.
She cried.
“Mommy.”
I walked alongside the stretcher until the doors.
“I’m here.”
“Come with me.”
“I can’t go through these doors, baby.”
Her lip trembled.
“Why?”
“Because these doctors are going to make your tummy better, and I have to wait right here.”
“You promise?”
“Yes.”
The doors closed.
Promises to children should be precise.
May you like
I could promise where I would wait.
I could not promise what the surgeons would find.
