“Not identical,” Rebecca said. “Close enough for cameras, staff, and digital systems trained on distance.”
Caleb had access to Adrian’s medical scans through the prison contractor. He studied his voice, posture, and signature.
Over time, he entered Cross Alpine facilities as Adrian.
Some decisions attributed to Elena’s father may have belonged to Caleb.
The forged insurance policy was only one example.
Evelyn ordered a review of every major authorization issued during Adrian’s travel periods.
The results were devastating.
Property transfers.
Private clinic payments.
Judicial retainers.
Access to Elena’s medical records.
Caleb had been using Adrian’s identity to build the current conspiracy while ensuring every trail pointed toward Elena’s father.
Yet several incriminating transactions occurred while Adrian was physically present.
Not everything could be blamed on the double.
Elena faced him.
“How many things did you knowingly approve?”
“Enough to keep this company alive.”
“That sentence has excused thirty years.”
Adrian looked older than he had the day before.
“I did not order your mother’s death.”
“Did you suppress the defect report?”
“Yes.”
“Did you accept her insurance money?”
“Yes.”
“Did you let Caleb take the full blame?”
“Yes.”
Each admission made Victor’s betrayal part of something inherited.
The men changed.
The logic remained.
Protect the company.
Control the wife.
Use the child’s future as leverage.
Victor requested another meeting with Elena.
This time Nora placed recording equipment in the room.
He entered without his blue suit jacket. Sleeplessness had stripped away some of his polish.
“Serena is going to kill us both,” he said.
“You pushed me.”
“She drugged you.”
“You used your hands.”
“I lost control.”
“You filed my death claim before we reached the mountain.”
“Because she told me the policy would expire at midnight.”
Elena stared.
Victor explained that Serena approached him two years earlier with evidence Adrian intended to remove Elena from the company trust.
She claimed the insurance rider was protection. If Elena died in an accident, Victor could prevent Adrian from taking everything.
“When did she ask you to kill me?”
“She never used that word.”
“When did you decide?”
Victor looked toward the floor.
“At the overlook.”
The answer was almost worse than a rehearsed plot.
He had carried paperwork, drugs, and forged records toward murder.
Then he claimed the final push was spontaneous.
Victor offered the location of Serena’s hidden financial server in exchange for protection.
Elena refused to bargain privately.
“Tell Nora.”
“She’ll arrest me.”
“That is not my problem.”
Victor leaned closer.
“Your father will sacrifice you the way he sacrificed Isabelle.”
Adrian moved toward the door, but Elena raised one hand.
Victor continued.
“The defect ledger does not only name Cross Alpine. It names Isabelle.”
Elena’s breath stopped.
According to Victor, Isabelle approved one of the defective equipment contracts before discovering the safety failures. Exposure would have destroyed her public reputation as well as Adrian’s company.
Serena possessed the signed original.
“She wants you to learn your mother was not innocent,” Victor said. “Then she wants you to destroy Adrian for her.”
“Where is Serena?”
“At the old Cross Alpine lodge on Independence Pass.”
The same property Isabelle visited before her fatal drive.
Nora mobilized a team.
Before they left, Noah’s neonatal unit received a transfer order.
It carried Elena’s genuine signature.
Not a digital copy.
The hospital original was handwritten in blue ink.
Elena had signed nothing since surgery.
Maya compared the pressure pattern.
“It is authentic.”
Adrian looked toward Elena’s bandaged hand.
Someone had obtained her signature while she was unconscious.
The order transferred Noah to the old mountain lodge’s private clinic.
Serena was not waiting for investigators.
