Chapter 13 - The Choice at the Nursery DoorElena trusted neither man.

She called Maya directly.

“Keep Noah where he is. Activate independent oxygen and seal the room.”

Maya obeyed.

The fire alarm proved false.

Someone had attempted to force a transfer using panic rather than paperwork.

Security found smoke canisters inside a supply closet. The access code belonged to Judge Sloan.

He was still somewhere in the hospital.

Both Adrian lookalikes were placed under armed supervision.

Victor watched Elena with grudging admiration.

“You finally stopped choosing between the options they give you.”

“You should have learned that before the cliff.”

He lowered his eyes.

Serena arrived under police guard after treatment for the lodge gas.

She identified the first man as Caleb.

Then she identified the second man as Caleb too.

Nora stared at her.

“One of them is Adrian.”

“Are you sure?”

Serena revealed that Caleb had recruited another surgical double years earlier—a former actor named Daniel Price. The identity program was designed to create conflicting sightings, not one perfect replacement.

Three men might now be using Adrian’s appearance.

The real Adrian could be neither hospital suspect.

Elena’s fear became colder.

“Where would Caleb keep him?”

“The Cross Alpine archive beneath the hospital.”

Adrian had funded the hospital’s mountain-trauma wing after Isabelle’s death. Beneath it lay a private records vault connected to old service tunnels.

Police entered.

They found Judge Sloan attempting to destroy the original succession file.

They also found Adrian bound inside a storage room, bruised but alive.

His identity was confirmed through a surgical implant installed after a heart procedure that Caleb could not duplicate.

The two hospital doubles were Caleb and Daniel.

Caleb had nearly reached Noah.

Daniel claimed he believed he was participating in a government security exercise.

No one believed his ignorance completely.

Adrian returned to Elena’s room.

For the first time, he removed the black overcoat and left it outside.

“I’m sorry,” he said.

“For which part?”

“All of it.”

“That is not specific enough.”

He admitted that he knew Caleb’s prison death had been staged. Judge Sloan told him Caleb entered witness protection after offering evidence against defense contractors.

Adrian kept silent because reopening the old case would expose Isabelle’s contract signature and Cross Alpine’s safety fraud.

“That silence gave him thirty years,” Elena said.

“Yes.”

“It gave Serena access to me.”

“Yes.”

“It taught Victor that money could bury anything.”

Adrian looked toward the floor.

“Yes.”

Elena did not forgive him.

But she no longer needed his confession to be clean.

Only complete.

Serena offered investigators the encryption key to Caleb’s server in exchange for protection for Madison and the unborn substitute child.

Elena supported protection for Madison.

Not immunity for Serena.

“She was used too,” Serena said.

“Madison was deceived. You designed the deception.”

Serena’s face hardened.

“You think you’re different because you survived.”

“No. I’m different because I’m not asking another woman to pay for what men did to me.”

The server opened.

It contained recordings of Victor planning the cliff visit, Judge Sloan approving the death certificates, and Caleb directing Serena to replicate Isabelle’s accident.

One audio file captured the final moments before Elena fell.

Victor said, “Sign the transfer.”

Elena refused.

Serena spoke through Victor’s earpiece.

“Do not come back without the claim.”

Then came the sound of Victor’s hands striking Elena.

The wind swallowed her scream.

The evidence was clear.

Yet Caleb’s final folder contained one more recording.

Adrian’s voice said:

“Let Victor proceed. If Elena survives, we expose the entire network.”

The date was two weeks before the cliff.

Elena turned toward her father.

Adrian went pale.

“I never said that.”

The recording passed the first authenticity test.

👉 The server proved Victor and Serena planned the cliff attack—but it also contained Adrian’s voice authorizing the plan to continue.
