Chapter 7 - The Woman Outside the NurseryHospital security reached the neonatal wing in less than a minute.

Serena was gone.

Noah remained inside his incubator, unharmed.

The nurses found no sign that anyone entered the room. The photograph had been taken through the corridor glass.

Yet Serena had known which infant was Noah.

He wore no public name bracelet.

His records existed under a sealed alias.

Someone inside the hospital had identified him.

Maya reviewed every access log.

One nurse had opened Noah’s chart from an unused terminal after midnight. The credential belonged to a neonatal specialist who was on vacation in Florida.

Serena had another cloned identity.

Elena demanded that Noah be moved again.

Maya refused to rush.

“Every transfer creates exposure. This unit is medically safest.”

“Serena stood outside his door.”

“And now every entrance is physically guarded.”

Adrian stationed private security at both ends of the corridor.

Nora objected but allowed it after verifying the officers’ backgrounds.

Victor requested permission to view his son’s remains.

The hospital informed him that the body had already been transferred for pathology review.

The supposed transfer order named Serena’s funeral company.

Victor called Elena immediately.

“They lost our child’s body.”

Elena listened to his performance.

“I thought you handled the funeral.”

“I never authorized this.”

“You authorized mine.”

Silence.

Then Victor said, “You remember more than you admit.”

The line disconnected.

Elena’s deception had begun to collapse.

The Cross Alpine board meeting proceeded that afternoon through a secure video platform. Victor appeared from the family’s Aspen penthouse wearing the same blue suit he wore at the hospital.

Serena’s chair remained empty.

Victor presented Elena’s forged incapacity directive and claimed Adrian’s emotional instability endangered the company.

“His daughter nearly died,” one director said.

“And he is using that tragedy to seize personal control,” Victor replied.

Adrian watched from Elena’s hospital room.

The directors could not see her.

The vote began.

Victor needed six approvals.

He received five.

Before the final director responded, Elena activated her camera.

Her bruised face appeared across the board screens.

Every voice stopped.

Victor leaned toward his computer.

“Elena?”

She sat upright despite the pain.

“I am conscious. I am competent. I revoke every authority Victor claims.”

The final director withdrew support.

Victor’s proxy collapsed.

Then Judge Sloan entered the meeting remotely.

He declared Elena’s statement unreliable because she remained under heavy medication.

He ordered an independent competency examination.

The chosen physician was Dr. Malcolm Hargrove.

The man missing since he fled with Serena.

Evelyn objected.

Sloan ended the meeting.

Adrian slammed his cane against the floor.

“He’s part of it.”

Elena studied the judge’s name.

Martin Sloan had notarized Isabelle’s old insurance claim thirty years earlier.

The same judge who helped Victor seize Elena’s authority had processed Adrian’s payment after her mother’s death.

He connected both mountain accidents.

Nora obtained a warrant for Sloan’s financial records.

Minutes before agents reached his home, the judge vanished.

His vehicle was found running at Aspen’s private airfield.

A chartered plane had departed using Serena’s passport.

The passenger list contained three names:

Serena Vale.

Martin Sloan.

And Caleb Voss.

Serena’s father was officially dead.

Yet the flight system showed his passport had been scanned in person.
