Then she raised both hands and surrendered.
At sixty-one, Rebecca looked older than her official photographs but unmistakably similar to Serena. The same narrow eyes. The same controlled stillness.
Nora questioned her inside the hospital.
Rebecca refused an attorney.
“I came to keep the baby alive.”
“You entered using false credentials,” Nora said.
“Because Serena’s people had already reached the nursery.”
“Who disconnected the tube?”
“A respiratory technician paid by Victor.”
The technician vanished before security sealed the floor.
Rebecca claimed she followed him inside and stopped the attack.
Elena watched through a monitor.
“Why should I trust her?”
“You shouldn’t,” Evelyn said. “But Noah is alive.”
Rebecca asked to speak directly with Elena.
They met under guard.
For several seconds, Rebecca stared at Elena’s face.
“You look like Isabelle when she was angry.”
“You knew my mother.”
“I loved her.”
The words surprised everyone.
Rebecca and Isabelle had grown up together. Rebecca later became her assistant. Caleb handled Adrian’s finances and married Rebecca shortly before Serena’s birth.
According to Rebecca, Isabelle discovered that Cross Alpine had been hiding deadly defects in mountain-construction equipment. She planned to expose Adrian’s board and Caleb’s accounting system.
Caleb claimed he wanted to help.
Adrian insisted the defects could be corrected quietly.
Neither man wanted the company destroyed.
“Who caused the accident?” Elena asked.
Rebecca lowered her eyes.
“I don’t know.”
“You spent thirty years planning revenge without knowing?”
“I spent thirty years collecting what they buried.”
After Isabelle’s death, Caleb confessed to financial crimes in exchange for Adrian protecting Rebecca and Serena.
Adrian broke that promise.
Cross Alpine’s attorneys portrayed Rebecca as an unstable accomplice. She lost her home and custody rights temporarily.
She disappeared before Serena could be placed permanently in foster care.
Caleb survived prison through Judge Sloan’s secret program. He and Rebecca reunited years later.
They raised Serena to believe Adrian had killed both Isabelle and the Voss family’s future.
“Did you tell Serena to marry Victor into my life?” Elena asked.
“I told her to get close to Cross Alpine.”
“She helped him push me from a cliff.”
Rebecca’s face tightened.
“She was supposed to expose Victor’s theft, not become part of it.”
“You lost control of her.”
“Yes.”
Rebecca produced a small key.
It opened a safe-deposit box held under Isabelle’s maiden name. Inside was the original Cross Alpine defect ledger and a reel of mountain-lodge security film from the night before the accident.
Caleb had hidden both.
“Why reveal them now?” Adrian asked through the glass.
Rebecca turned toward him.
“Because Serena stopped caring who died.”
The safe-deposit box also contained a copy of Elena’s current insurance policy.
It had been created three years before Victor claimed to know about it.
The requesting party was not Victor.
It was Adrian.
Elena stared at her father.
Adrian denied authorizing the new policy.
Rebecca smiled without warmth.
“Then someone has been using your identity longer than Victor has been using Elena’s.”
Evelyn examined the digital certificate.
It originated from Adrian’s private office computer.
Only three people possessed physical access at the time.
Adrian.
Serena.
And Elena.
Elena had been in Europe that week.
Serena’s travel records placed her in New York.
Adrian alone appeared inside the building.
Then security footage from three years earlier surfaced.
A man entered Adrian’s office after midnight.
He had Adrian’s face, height, and gait.
But Adrian was speaking at a conference in Chicago at that exact moment.
Someone had built a physical duplicate convincing enough to defeat the company’s cameras.
Rebecca whispered one name.
“Caleb.”
Caleb Voss had undergone reconstructive surgery while inside the secret medical program.
