Chapter 23 - SERENA VALE’S INHERITANCESerena’s childhood had been built from a conviction.

Caleb took responsibility for Cross Alpine’s fraud.

Rebecca lost her home and legal security.

Adrian’s company continued.

Serena entered foster care believing the Cross family had sacrificed her parents to protect wealth.

Much of that belief was true.

Rebecca and Caleb later returned and shaped the truth into a mission.

Serena studied Elena.

Entered Cross Alpine.

Managed medical benefits.

Introduced Victor.

Copied Isabelle’s rider.

Arranged Madison’s embryo program.

Prepared the tea.

Supplied the labor-inducing drug.

Sent instructions through Victor’s earpiece.

Created the clinic where another woman would become Elena.

“Did you want Elena dead?” the prosecutor asked.

Serena remained silent for several seconds.

“I wanted Adrian to experience what my family experienced.”

“That was not the question.”

“At the cliff, I knew Victor might kill her.”

“Did you stop him?”

“No.”

“You said, ‘Do not come back without the claim.’”

“Yes.”

The conspiracy supported attempted-murder liability even though Victor’s hands delivered the push.

Serena’s defense emphasized her later actions.

She gave investigators the server key.

Protected Madison’s location from Caleb.

Revealed the identity program.

Helped rescue the lodge team after her father released gas.

Provided the recording proving Victor’s assault.

Those actions mattered.

They happened after Elena and Noah nearly died.

Serena claimed the breathing-tube instruction targeted the respiratory technician who had entered to harm Noah.

The message logs disproved her.

She ordered the technician to create an emergency that would force the hospital to reveal the child’s location and medical alias.

She believed nurses would reconnect the tube immediately.

The technician left the room locked.

Rebecca intervened.

“You endangered a premature infant to expose a record,” Elena said in her statement.

“Yes,” Serena answered.

No defense followed.

The jury convicted Serena of attempted-murder conspiracy, poisoning, reproductive fraud, medical identity theft, insurance fraud, kidnapping conspiracy, obstruction, and reckless endangerment of Noah and Madison.

She was convicted of directing the premature-labor attack.

She was acquitted of attempting to murder Noah because evidence showed she intended a brief disconnection rather than death, though the conduct created grave risk.

Her cooperation and Caleb’s attempt to kill her affected sentencing.

Her planning and professional access increased it.

Serena received decades in prison.

She forfeited all claims to Cross Alpine and Oliver’s custody. The court preserved her genetic relationship without treating it as a current parental right.

At sentencing, Serena looked toward Elena.

“You had Adrian.”

“I had a father who concealed my mother’s survival.”

“You had the company.”

“I had a company built partly from defective equipment and insurance fraud.”

“You had the childhood I should have had.”

“I had a childhood grieving someone you knew was alive.”

Serena’s face changed.

She had spent years imagining Elena’s life as complete because the Cross name remained intact.

The truth did not excuse her.

It removed the fantasy beneath the revenge.

Madison allowed Serena to submit medical history for Oliver through the child advocate. She allowed no photographs during infancy.

At twelve, Oliver chose to read Serena’s first letter.

She wrote that he had been created because she wanted both a child and a weapon against Adrian.

She admitted the two desires became impossible to separate.

Oliver did not answer then.

As an adult, he would write once.

The relationship remained his to define.

Rebecca visited Serena in custody.

Their first meeting ended after Serena asked:

“Did you ever want me to have a life outside Isabelle’s death?”

Rebecca could not answer quickly enough.

Serena left the room.

Caleb’s case began after her sentencing.
