Chapter 25 - THE BROTHER WHO CARRIED ANOTHER CHILD’S NAMEThe original Malcolm Hargrove lived for nine days.
His mother, Denise Hargrove, had delivered him prematurely at the same clinic where Isabelle gave birth to Gabriel. The infant died from respiratory complications.
Denise was told the body had been transferred for examination.
Instead, Judge Sloan reused the birth record for Gabriel.
Denise believed her son had been buried in an unmarked county grave.
She was still alive.
Investigators contacted her through independent counsel before revealing Hargrove’s current identity.
“I do not want to meet the man who used my child’s name,” she said.
Hargrove did not challenge the refusal.
For the first time, he began using Gabriel Cross in legal proceedings.
Keeping Malcolm would continue the theft.
Changing immediately did not erase thirty years of living under it.
The corrected records preserved both.
His trial focused on medicine.
Gabriel argued that Caleb and Rebecca raised him inside an emergency operation and that Cross Alpine controlled every safe institution available during his youth.
The prosecution accepted his childhood circumstances.
Then it examined adulthood.
Gabriel became licensed.
Earned independent income.
Built professional relationships.
Could have disclosed Isabelle through patient advocates, regulators, or courts outside Sloan’s control.
Instead, he became Elena’s obstetrician under a false identity.
He performed Madison’s embryo transfer.
Signed fraudulent death reports.
Allowed Serena access to Noah’s genetic files.
Prepared the replacement admission.
Attached Isabelle’s signature to Noah’s rider.
Failed to report missing medication.
He did not push Elena.
He helped construct the medical world that made her death administratively complete.
“Did you love your sister?” the prosecutor asked.
Gabriel looked toward Elena.
“I watched her from childhood.”
“That was not the question.”
“Yes.”
“Did she know you existed?”
“No.”
“Did you believe love gave you authority over her pregnancy?”
“No.”
“Yet you exercised it.”
“Yes.”
The jury convicted Gabriel of reproductive fraud, medical assault against Madison, identity theft, obstruction, insurance conspiracy, falsification of death records, and reckless endangerment of Elena and Noah.
He was convicted of participating in the premature-labor conspiracy because evidence showed he recognized the missing drug and allowed the hospital operation to continue without warning Elena.
He was acquitted of attempted murder. The prosecution did not prove he intended either patient to die.
His evidence, cooperation, upbringing, and care of Isabelle reduced the sentence.
His status as physician and Elena’s undisclosed brother increased it.
He received a long prison term and permanent revocation of his medical license.
Before sentencing, Denise Hargrove submitted a statement.
“My son’s name was not an empty document because he lived only nine days.”
Gabriel listened without asking for forgiveness.
Isabelle spoke next.
“I taught Gabriel that Cross Alpine would erase him if he stepped into the light. When he became old enough to choose, I continued accepting his secrecy because it protected me.”
Elena’s statement separated the roles.
“Gabriel is my brother biologically. He was also my doctor without my informed consent. One relationship does not cancel the violation inside the other.”
Gabriel looked toward her.
“Will you ever call me your brother?”
“I already described you accurately. A relationship will depend on what exists outside this courtroom.”
During custody, Gabriel sent medical history regarding Isabelle and himself. Elena accepted it through counsel.
No personal letters were delivered for years.
Denise eventually allowed one written apology.
Gabriel did not explain the program first.
He wrote:
“I lived under your son’s name. I did not choose it as an infant. I later chose not to correct it because the name protected me.”
Denise kept the letter and requested no further contact.
Rebecca’s criminal case proceeded next.
She had saved Isabelle, Serena, Gabriel, and Noah at different moments.
