Victor arrived under police escort to identify Caleb’s methods.
He studied the footage.
“The man entering the elevator is Adrian.”
“How do you know?” Elena asked.
“He touches his left cuff before pressing a button. Caleb copies visible habits, but he doesn’t know the private ones.”
“Then who left my room?”
Victor enlarged the image.
The man adjusted the black overcoat with his right hand.
“Caleb.”
Elena felt violated.
Caleb had stood beside her bed, close enough to touch her, while wearing her father’s face.
Security tracked him toward the neonatal wing.
The locked elevator opened.
Adrian stepped out.
Officers surrounded him.
He raised his hands and gave Victor’s private identification signal.
Was it Adrian proving his identity?

Elena ordered both men’s locations frozen until DNA testing.
The second Adrian was found inside the hospital chapel.

Evelyn suggested testing an old injury only Adrian would have.
Elena remembered that her father lost part of his left index finger in a machinery accident before she was born.

Elena spoke to them through separate monitors.
The first man said, “Your mother called you Leni when you were afraid.”
The second said, “She stopped after you learned to say Elena.”

The second described the lullaby she sang.

“Which one sounds like Adrian?”
“The first.”

“Exactly what Caleb expected you to say.”
A fire alarm sounded in the neonatal wing.
Both men looked toward the door.
One shouted, “Move Noah.”
