Chapter 5 - Adrian’s First ClaimAdrian refused to explain until the room was cleared.
Only Elena and Evelyn remained.
Snow moved across the mountains beyond the hospital glass. Adrian stood with his back to his daughter, his black overcoat still buttoned as though he planned to leave at any moment.
“Your mother’s death was not like this,” he said.
“You filed before she was found.”
“The rescue commander said the avalanche buried her vehicle.”
“That is not an answer.”
Adrian finally turned.
Isabelle Cross had been eight months pregnant when her car disappeared on Independence Pass. Elena, then fourteen months old, was with a nanny in Aspen.
Adrian claimed Isabelle had driven away after an argument.
Her vehicle was found beneath an avalanche the next morning.
Her body was recovered two days later.
The unborn child did not survive.
Adrian’s business partner, Caleb Voss, filed the insurance paperwork on Adrian’s behalf.
“The timestamp shows your authorization,” Evelyn said.
“Caleb used my credentials.”
“Did you challenge the payment?”
“No.”
“Why?”
“Cross Alpine was collapsing. Isabelle’s policy kept thousands of employees working.”
Elena stared at him.
“You used her death to save the company.”
“I used the money after she was dead.”
“You never questioned why the claim was ready?”
“I questioned everything.”
“Not publicly.”
Adrian’s silence admitted more than his words.
Caleb Voss later went to prison for financial fraud involving Cross Alpine. He died there, according to official records.
Serena Vale was Caleb’s daughter.
Her surname had been shortened when she entered foster care.
Elena felt the structure rearrange around her.
Serena had not entered the family by chance.
She had spent years inside Adrian’s company while hiding that she was the daughter of the man blamed for Isabelle’s insurance scheme.
“Did you know who she was?” Elena asked.
Adrian’s eyes hardened.
“Not at first.”
“When did you learn?”
“Three years ago.”
“And you kept her near me?”
“I wanted to know what she was looking for.”
Elena stared at him in disbelief.
“You used me to observe her.”
“I placed security around you.”
“She arranged my medical care.”
“I underestimated how deeply she had reached.”
“You always call danger manageable until someone else pays for it.”
Adrian absorbed the accusation without defense.
Evelyn discovered that Serena had accessed Isabelle’s sealed accident file repeatedly. She copied the original policy language and used it to design Elena’s rider.
Victor may have believed he invented the scheme.
Serena had given him the blueprint.
A nurse entered with an urgent update.
Elena’s blood pressure had risen dangerously. The baby’s heart rate showed sudden distress.
Dr. Hargrove was missing, so the hospital assigned an independent maternal-fetal specialist, Dr. Maya Chen.
Maya examined the IV line.
A medication had been added that could trigger premature labor.
The bag had been replaced twenty minutes earlier.
Security footage showed a hospital orderly entering the room while Adrian and Elena argued.
The orderly’s badge was false.
Police found the uniform inside a stairwell.
In the pocket lay a burner phone.
One message had been sent:
FIRST CLAIM FAILED. COMPLETE THE SECOND.
The recipient was Victor.
He denied receiving it voluntarily. He claimed Serena had cloned his number.
Then Elena’s contractions began.
The baby was only thirty-two weeks.
Doctors rushed her toward emergency surgery.
As the doors closed, Elena saw Victor at the end of the corridor.
He was not asking whether she would survive.
