Chapter 6 - The Son Declared DeadElena woke to silence.

No heart monitor from the baby.
No newborn cry.
Only Adrian sitting beside her bed with both hands clasped around his cane.
Her first words tore through her damaged throat.
“Where is he?”
Adrian leaned forward.
“Alive.”
Elena broke into sobs.
Her son had been delivered by emergency cesarean section. He weighed less than four pounds but breathed with assistance inside a protected neonatal unit.
Dr. Maya Chen had transferred him under an emergency alias.
Publicly, the hospital announced that Elena survived surgery but the child did not.
Only five people knew the truth.
Elena.
Adrian.
Maya.
Evelyn.
And Detective Nora Bell.
“Victor believes the baby died?” Elena asked.
“He demanded confirmation,” Evelyn said. “The hospital gave him a sealed statement.”
Elena looked toward the nursery wall beyond her room.
“I want to see him.”
Maya arranged a private video connection.
A tiny infant lay beneath warm lights with a breathing tube and knitted blue cap.
Elena touched the screen.
“Noah.”
She had chosen the name months earlier.
Victor had objected because it came from Elena’s grandfather.
Now the name felt like something reclaimed.
Victor arrived later carrying grief he no longer needed to fake completely. He had lost the substitute heir his plan required.
He stood beside Elena’s bed.
“I’m sorry.”
She looked away.
“Did you love him?”
“He was my son.”
“That isn’t what I asked.”
Victor’s face tightened.
“You think I wanted this?”
“I don’t know what you want anymore.”
He lowered his voice.
“Your father has already turned the hospital against me. He won’t let me see the medical file.”
“Maybe because you declared Noah dead before he was born.”
Victor stepped backward.
Elena had used the name deliberately.
He glanced toward the door.
“Who told you the child’s sex?”
“You did. On the claim.”
Victor stared at her.
For one second, the mask dropped completely.
Then he recovered.
“Serena handled the documents.”
“Yet you signed them.”
He left without touching her.
Later that evening, Victor contacted the insurer and amended his claim. Instead of the Family Catastrophe Rider, he requested payment for Elena’s permanent incapacity and the child’s death.
The amount remained fifty million dollars.
More importantly, he sought temporary control of her Cross Alpine shares as legal guardian.
Evelyn filed an objection.
Victor produced a medical directive carrying Elena’s signature. It named him sole decision-maker if she experienced neurological impairment.
The document had been notarized by Judge Martin Sloan, one of Adrian’s longtime business allies.
Elena had never signed it.
Yet the signature appeared genuine.
Adrian admitted that his company’s legal department stored biometric handwriting samples for executive contracts.
Serena had managed the archive.
Victor requested an emergency hearing from the hospital.
Judge Sloan granted him temporary access to Elena’s financial records before Evelyn could challenge the forgery.
The ruling allowed Victor to enter the Cross Alpine board system.
He immediately scheduled a vote to remove Adrian as chairman and recognize himself as Elena’s proxy.
Elena watched the notification appear.
“He thinks I’m trapped in this bed.”
Adrian looked toward the snowy windows.
“He thinks grief made you weak.”
Elena turned the phone toward Evelyn.
“Let him hold the vote.”
Adrian frowned.
“Why?”
“Because Serena will return for the company.”
The following morning, a message arrived from an unknown number.
It contained a photograph of Serena standing outside Noah’s protected neonatal room.
