Seven-year-olds understand loyalty.
He loved his mother.
He knew something bad could happen if he told the truth.
During his interview he first said:
“Mommy gets loud.”
Then:
“She doesn’t hit me.”
Then:
“Only when she doesn’t mean to.”
The interviewer did not seize on the contradiction.
Slowly Caleb described three incidents.
The arm grab documented as soccer.
A shove into a bedroom door when he refused to clean up.
No serious injury.
And one occasion when Bethany grabbed the back of his shirt and pulled him away from a staircase while yelling.
That one might actually have prevented a fall.
Context mattered.
Investigators separated discipline, panic, anger, and injury.
Not every moment became an abuse allegation.
The strongest prior incident remained the arm bruising.
Caleb also said:
“Grandma says Mommy has big feelings.”
Then:
“Grandpa says I have to help her not get upset.”
Seven years old.
Responsible for an adult’s regulation.
That sentence changed Daniel.
