Chapter 24 - MY PARENTSMom apologized before Dad.

That did not make it simple.

She came to a therapist-mediated meeting eighteen months after the party.

Rosie was not there.

Mom looked smaller.

Maybe she was.

Maybe I had stopped seeing her as powerful.

She said:

“I was trying to keep the family together.”

I answered:

“You grabbed me while I was carrying an injured child.”

“I know.”

“You saw Rosie crying before I found her.”

Her face changed.

“Yes.”

“You didn’t check.”

“No.”

“Why?”

She cried.

“Because Bethany told me she was having a tantrum.”

“And you wanted that to be true.”

“Yes.”

That was enough.

Dad took longer.

He still framed the glass as losing his temper.

I asked:

“What were you trying to make me do?”

He stared.

“Stay.”

“Why?”

“So we could talk.”

“My daughter was bruised.”

“I know that now.”

“You knew then.”

He closed his eyes.

“Yes.”

“Then what was there to talk about before I left?”

May you like

No answer.

That became his answer.
