He also failed Caleb before that.
Family court required him to participate in protective-parent education and counseling.
For several months, his custody arrangements were closely reviewed.
Caleb remained primarily with him because authorities found Daniel currently protective and cooperative.
Bethany received supervised contact.
The grandparents were not approved supervisors.
Daniel once told me:
“I keep wanting somebody to tell me I did the right thing.”
“You recorded.”
“Eventually.”
“Yes.”
“I gave police everything.”
“Yes.”
“But before that?”
I looked at him.
“You already know.”
He nodded.
He wanted absolution.
I could not give it.
Neither could I deny what he did when it finally counted.
