Chapter 7 - MY MOTHER’S VERSIONMom called the injury “rough play.”
She called the glass “an accident.”
She called my slap “the real violence.”
Her first written statement said:
Rosie was playing with suction toys.
Rosie became upset.
Bethany attempted to calm her.
I entered without understanding.
I attacked Bethany.
Mom tried to stop me.
I struck her hand.
Dad stood because he believed I might attack Mom.
The drinking glass left his hand during the commotion.
An accident.
The video destroyed that last claim.
Dad drew his arm back.
Looked directly at me.
Threw.
Nothing accidental.
Mom then changed from:
The glass slipped.
To:
Harold meant to throw it against the wall.
Then:
He was trying to frighten Aaron into stopping.
That was closer.
My father later admitted he intended to throw the glass past me.
He insisted he never meant to hit Rosie.
That was probably true.
