Chapter 26 - THE LAST FAMILY MEETINGTwo years and seven months after the party, I agreed to one final mediated meeting with Mom and Dad.

Not reconciliation.

Information.

Dad’s health had worsened.

Mom wanted clarity about whether they would ever have contact with Rosie.

Julia and I had already decided.

Not unsupervised.

Possibly structured contact in the future only if Rosie wanted it.

The meeting lasted fifty-three minutes.

Dad asked:

“Does she hate me?”

“She barely knows you now.”

That hurt him more.

Mom asked:

“Can we send birthday cards?”

“Yes.”

“Will you give them to her?”

“If appropriate.”

Dad stared at the table.

Then:

“I keep thinking about the glass.”

“So do I.”

“I wasn’t trying to hit her.”

“I believe you.”

He looked up, surprised.

Then I said:

“You were willing to risk hitting her to stop me leaving.”

His face collapsed.

There was nothing left to argue.

Mom said:

“We thought if you walked out, Bethany would lose Caleb.”

I answered:

“And if I stayed?”

She looked confused.

“What?”

“What did you think staying would change about Rosie’s bruises?”

Neither spoke.

That question was the center of everything.

They had not been trying to change facts.

They had been trying to control who got to see them.

I stood.

Mom asked:

“Is this goodbye?”

“No.”

It wasn’t.

There were Christmas cards.

A few supervised video calls.

An illness update.

Ordinary limited contact.

But the old version of the family ended in that room.

That part deserved no resurrection.
