Chapter 9 - CALEB’S ARMThe first prior incident surfaced from Caleb’s pediatric records.
Five months before the birthday, Caleb had been seen for bruising around his upper left arm.
The chart said:
Injury during backyard soccer.
Daniel had taken him.
He told the pediatrician Caleb fell against a fence.
At the new investigation, Daniel admitted that was false.
Bethany had grabbed Caleb during an argument about homework.
Hard enough to leave a pattern.
Daniel photographed the bruise.
Then deleted the photo after my parents came over.
Why?
Because Dad told him:
“You call the authorities and they’ll take the boy from both of you.”
Mom said:
“Bethany needs support, not humiliation.”
Bethany cried.
Apologized.
Promised counseling.
Daniel agreed to the soccer story.
He told investigators:
“I thought I was protecting Caleb from losing his mother.”
Detective Cole asked:
“Were you also protecting Bethany?”
Daniel cried.
“Yes.”
May you like
That confession did not make him innocent.
It made him useful.
