Chapter 17 - WHY DANIEL RECORDED THE PARTYDaniel had almost canceled the birthday.
The morning of the party, Bethany and he fought.
She had discovered he scheduled a consultation with a family-law attorney.
Not filed for divorce.
Consultation.
Bethany accused him of planning to take Caleb.
Daniel denied it.
She demanded his phone.
He refused.
Dad came over early.
Mom too.
There was a family discussion before guests arrived.
Daniel later described it as an intervention directed at him.
My parents wanted him to stay.
Bethany promised to return to counseling.
Daniel agreed to postpone any decision until after Caleb’s birthday.
But he turned on his camera twice during the party because Bethany had already been drinking and snapping at people.
The first recording captured fragments.
The second began when he saw Mom following Bethany toward the guest hallway.
Then I emerged carrying Rosie.
Daniel did not know what had happened yet.
He kept recording.
That decision saved the case from becoming four adult versions against one another.
