The question was no longer only what happened to Rosie.
A child accused his mother of nothing.
Rosie accused her aunt.
But if an adult intentionally injured one child in her home, authorities had to assess the child who lived there.
Daniel agreed to a temporary safety plan.
Bethany left the house.
She stayed with Mom and Dad.
Caleb remained with Daniel.
No unsupervised contact between Bethany and either child.
No discussion of the case with Caleb.
No grandparents supervising visits.
Bethany reacted as though authorities had kidnapped her son.
She posted nothing publicly because her attorney stopped her.
Mom had fewer restraints.
She called relatives.
She said I was destroying Bethany’s family over “toy marks.”
Aunt Linda called me.
“Could this be handled privately?”
“No.”
“She’s your sister.”
“Rosie is my daughter.”
“Aaron—”
“No.”
I hung up.
It became a sentence people disliked hearing.
Rosie is my daughter.
As though loyalty had suddenly become competitive.
The truth was simpler.
