Chapter 10 - THE CLINICSterling and Caroline accompanied me to Northbridge Reproductive Medicine.

We met Dr. Wells.

He had known David and me for three years.

When I finally authorized him to release the relevant records, he asked:

“Are you sure?”

“No.”

Good enough.

The file was thick.

Infertility evaluation.

Treatment attempts.

Counseling forms.

Consent documents.

Embryology reports.

And one diagnosis David had never wanted his mother to know.

Azoospermia.

No sperm present.

Result of chemotherapy David received at twenty-nine for testicular cancer.

He survived the cancer.

Nobody in his family knew the treatment had left him infertile.

He had banked sperm before chemotherapy.

Those samples were later determined nonviable after thaw.

We tried surgical retrieval.

Unsuccessful.

Then David and I made a decision.

Donor sperm.

The baby inside me had been conceived using my egg and sperm from an anonymous screened donor.

David knew.

I knew.

The fertility clinic knew.

That was all.

Until Eleanor went hunting.
