Chapter 15 - THE BUSINESS TURNS AGAINST MEBennett Architectural Lighting’s board held an emergency meeting.
I attended by video.
Eight months pregnant.
Funeral bruise fading.
David’s chair empty.
Eleanor wanted the board to recognize Chloe as the likely future holder of David’s shares if the unborn child failed to qualify under the Bennett family trust and shareholder agreement.
Sterling objected.
The independent directors objected.
The company’s counsel said:
“No ownership transfer occurs until probate and trust interpretation are resolved.”
Eleanor accused everyone of protecting me.
I finally said:
“You’re treating my child like a defective share certificate.”
Silence.
Bad line?
Maybe.
True enough.
Chloe answered:
“You’re trying to give Bennett control to a stranger’s child.”
There it was.
Blood.
The thing David feared.
One independent director, Frank Morales, said:
“The baby is David’s legal child unless and until a court says otherwise. Stop speaking about an unborn child as though we’re reviewing defective inventory.”
