Her conclusion irritated everyone because it was careful.
“The report’s exclusion may be biologically accurate.”
Eleanor’s lawyer looked pleased.
Dr. Hall continued:
“But the report’s chain of custody is insufficient for me to authenticate the alleged David Bennett reference sample. I also cannot verify the provenance or integrity of the fetal profile from the documents provided.”
Meaning:
It might be right.
But not because Eleanor had proven anything properly.
And in our case, David was indeed not the genetic father.
Caroline asked:
“If we stipulate biological exclusion, what remains?”
Dr. Hall replied:
“A legal question, not a genetic one.”
Exactly.
That sentence became central.
Eleanor believed DNA ended the conversation.
