Chapter 22 - I GO INTO LABORThe baby arrived twelve days early.

During a deposition.
Of course.
Eleanor’s attorney was asking:
“Mrs. Bennett, did you ever represent publicly that David was the child’s biological father?”
I said:
“I represented that he was the father.”
Then my water broke.
I looked down.
The court reporter stopped typing.
Caroline said:
“Sarah?”
“I think this deposition is over.”
Even Eleanor’s attorney panicked.
The baby was born seven hours later.
A girl.
Seven pounds, one ounce.
Healthy.
I named her Grace Elizabeth Bennett.
Grace because David had once said our family needed some.
Elizabeth for my mother.
On the birth certificate, subject to state procedures and the assisted-reproduction documentation, David was recorded as father.
Not because someone faked biology.
Because legal parentage is not always reducible to genetics.
I cried when I saw his name.
May you like
Grace slept through it.
Already practical.
