Chapter 9 - CHLOE’S VERSION OF HISTORYChloe gave a sworn statement.

According to her:

David had suspected me of infidelity.

That was why the DNA test existed.

False.

She claimed:

David told her four months earlier:

“I’m not even sure the baby is mine.”

I knew immediately he had said something similar once.

Context mattered.

At Easter dinner, Eleanor criticized our refusal to announce the baby’s sex.

David joked:

“For all we know, it’s not even mine. Sarah won’t let me see the lab portal.”

Everyone laughed.

Because he was joking about being excluded from pregnancy apps.

Chloe now presented it as suspicion.

That infuriated me.

Then she described me leaving a restaurant with a male colleague.

True.

Dr. Nathan Wells.

Our fertility specialist.

Chloe had photographed us.

Why?

Because Eleanor hired a private investigator after seeing fertility-clinic charges on David’s insurance history.

There.

The first crack.

Eleanor already knew fertility treatment existed.

Not what kind.
