Chapter 10 - The baby

Our daughter was born five days after the steam-room incident.
Not because doctors induced me out of fear.
I went into spontaneous labor at thirty-eight weeks and five days.
Fourteen hours.
Epidural.
Healthy baby girl.
Seven pounds, one ounce.
I named her Elise.
Arthur was not in the delivery room.
That was my decision.
He received notification through counsel after the birth.
He requested hospital visitation.
I refused.
The family court later allowed limited supervised contact once temporary orders were entered.
Some people told me:
“He missed his child being born because of his mother.”
No.
Arthur missed the birth because when I needed him to open a locked door, he walked away from it.
