Chapter 9 - My mistake at the hospital

When Arthur was finally allowed to speak to me by phone, I made a mistake.
I was exhausted.
Scared.
Still connected to fetal monitors.
He said:
“I’m sorry.”
I replied:
“I’m going to bury you and your mother.”
Silence.
Then:
“Maya.”
“You left me there.”
“I didn’t know—”
“I will make sure neither of you ever sees this baby.”
Rachel took the phone from my hand.
Too late.
Arthur’s lawyer preserved the voicemail system recording from his phone.
Months later, it appeared in family-court filings as evidence that I was retaliatory and intended to alienate our child from him.
