Chapter 24 - Elise learns the word Jacaranda
At two, Elise could not say Jacaranda.
She said:
“Jack-a-da.”
Rachel thought this was hysterical.
I did not tell Elise the word’s history.
It became simply the name of the purple tree Rachel planted in a pot outside her condo.
Eventually we planted one in my new backyard too.
Not as a trauma shrine.
Because I liked the flowers.
At three, Elise asked:
“Why Aunt Rachel say Jack-a-da funny?”
Rachel said:
“Because Mommy once sent me that word when she needed help.”
Elise looked at me.
“You needed help?”
“Yes.”
“Were you little?”
“No.”
This astonished her.
“Grown-ups need help?”
