Chapter 23 - My divorce

Arthur and I tried three joint counseling sessions.

Not reconciliation counseling.

Co-parenting.

During the second, he said:

“I thought if I challenged Mom, everything would collapse.”

I asked:

“Everything except me?”

He cried.

I did not comfort him.

The therapist did not require me to.

Arthur continued:

“I kept ranking emergencies. Business. Mom. House. Baby. You.”

“You put me last.”

“Yes.”

That answer ended something cleanly.

I filed for divorce.

We divided property according to ordinary law.

Our townhouse was marital.

So were retirement contributions.

Arthur’s business interest required valuation.

No punitive forfeiture.

No judge gave me everything because I was pregnant in a steam room.

The divorce took fourteen months.

We became co-parents before we stopped being spouses on paper.
