Chapter 11 - The Children in the AmbulanceTwo girls and a boy climbed from the ambulance into the storm.

They wore winter coats over thin institutional clothing. Each carried a laminated card instead of identification.

Marcus turned toward the monitor.

He had not expected the doors to open.

The tracker’s emergency button activated a safety protocol inside the transport vehicle. It released magnetic locks and sent a distress signal to every nearby Mercer device.

The children ran toward the house.

Sarah moved before Marcus could stop her.

She opened the safe-room door, grabbed the emergency blankets, and shouted for them to enter.

Marcus seized her arm.

Lily bit his hand.

He released Sarah with a curse.

Rosa opened the tunnel’s house-side exit remotely, allowing Nathan to reach the pantry from below. He struck Marcus before the man could regain control.

The fight was brief and brutal.

Nathan drove him into the shelves.

Marcus recovered quickly and reached beneath his coat.

Sarah kicked the weapon away.

Rosa pulled the children behind the reinforced door while Nathan forced Marcus into the hallway.

Evelyn ran.

She disappeared through the eastern breach.

Marcus followed rather than remain trapped.

Nathan sealed the inner house.

The safe room now held Sarah, Lily, the twins, and three unknown children.

One girl called herself Emily Vale.

Her name appeared on the heir list.

She was ten.

Marcus had told her that her mother abandoned her and that he was taking her to a new family.

Sarah examined the laminated card.

It identified Emily as a patient with severe behavioral problems.

The child spoke calmly, almost mechanically.

“I am dangerous when I remember things.”

Rosa knelt.

“Who told you that?”

“The doctors.”

The boy, Jacob Reed, remained near the doorway.

Four years old.

Dark hair.

Gray eyes.

Nathan saw Claire in his face before anyone spoke.

Jacob carried a blue music box with a cracked lid.

Claire had owned one exactly like it.

Nathan opened the box.

Inside was her photograph.

His hands began shaking.

Jacob looked up.

“Are you Nathan?”

“Yes.”

“Grandpa says you get mad when people tell you secrets.”

Nathan crouched.

“Grandpa Elias?”

The boy nodded.

“Is he your father?”

Nathan could not answer quickly enough.

Jacob touched the photograph.

“Mommy said you would know the song.”

Nathan turned the key.

A melody played—the same lullaby Claire used to hum while driving through snow.

There was no longer room to deny what the child might be.

Sarah began crying.

“Nathan, I’m sorry.”

He did not look at her.

The third child, a twelve-year-old girl named Ava, said Marcus used the ambulance to move them whenever one protected house became unsafe.

He promised they were being rescued.

But the children never returned to their families.

“Where were you going tonight?” Nathan asked.

“To the greenhouse.”

Elias intended to gather the known heirs in one location.

Lily.

The twins.

Emily.

Jacob.

Ava’s connection remained unclear.

She opened her laminated card.

The surname was Mercer.

Ava Mercer.

Nathan did not know her.

Sarah did.

“Ava is Dad’s daughter.”

Elias had fathered another child during the years he was supposedly dead.

Ava was Nathan and Sarah’s half-sister.

Continuity’s heir network was still expanding.

Nathan looked toward the greenhouse monitor.

Elias was no longer there.

The helicopter had vanished.

Only Marcus’s Range Rover remained near the gate.

Then the county emergency channel finally connected.

Real Sheriff Daniel Hart announced that rescue vehicles were approaching from the southern road.

Nathan almost felt relief.

Ava grabbed his sleeve.

“Don’t let Sheriff Hart in.”

“Why?”

“He brings us to Grandpa.”

The rescue convoy appeared on the security screen.

The lead vehicle carried a county sheriff’s emblem.

The driver was Daniel Hart.
