Chapter 3 - The Truth Sewn Into the CoatThe power stabilized on the independent battery bank.

Nathan locked the foyer doors and checked the house’s internal network. Marcus had not entered the system, but he was trying.
Repeated authentication requests struck the firewall using old Mercer family credentials.
Rosa examined Lily’s feet and hands.
“She needs a hospital.”
“I know.”
“She may have frostbite.”
“I know.”
“Nathan, anger won’t warm her.”
He forced himself to breathe.
Rosa was right.
They placed Lily beneath heated blankets and gave her small sips of warm fluid. The twins began crying, weakly at first, then louder.
It was the best sound Nathan had heard all night.
He returned to Sarah’s envelope.
The legal papers concerned the Mercer Legacy Trust, established by Nathan and Sarah’s father, Elias Mercer. The trust owned controlling shares in Mercer Dynamics, extensive mountain property, and several protected investment accounts.
Nathan had resigned from the company years earlier.
Sarah remained trustee for her children.
If she died or became incapacitated, control passed to the children’s legal guardian.
The original document named Nathan.
A newer amendment named Marcus.
Sarah’s note said the amendment was forged.
She had discovered the forgery after receiving a banking alert for a transfer she never approved.
Marcus had already borrowed more than forty million dollars against assets belonging to Lily and the twins.
If the fraud became public, he would lose everything.
If Sarah died and Nathan appeared to abduct the children, Marcus could present himself as the grieving father protecting them from an unstable uncle.
The court would hand him the trust.
Nathan reached the final legal attachment.
A life-insurance policy worth seventy-five million dollars had been opened on Sarah six months earlier.
Marcus was the beneficiary.
Rosa read over his shoulder.
“This isn’t only financial abuse. This is preparation.”
“He planned every exit.”
“Maybe not this one.”
She touched the torn coat.
Sarah had trusted Lily to reach Nathan when every adult system around her was compromised.
The child stirred.
Nathan sat beside her.
“Lily, what did you see before your mother sent you away?”
She stared at the ceiling.
“Marcus came home angry.”
“Was anyone with him?”
“The wolf man. And Aunt Evelyn.”
Nathan frowned.
“There is no Aunt Evelyn.”
“She says I have to call her that.”
“What does she look like?”
“Yellow hair. White coat. She takes pictures when Mommy cries.”
Rosa stiffened.
“Social worker?”
“Maybe.”
Nathan searched Sarah’s papers.
A woman named Evelyn Crane had completed the emergency family assessment attached to Marcus’s custody petition.
Her report described Sarah as delusional, violent, and dangerous around the children.
The report was signed two days earlier.
Lily said Evelyn had been inside the home that night helping Marcus ransack it.
Nathan asked about the red bird.
Lily closed her eyes.
“Mommy put her phone inside it.”
“Did Marcus find it?”
“He smashed the blue bird.”
There had never been a blue bird on Sarah’s mantel.
She must have placed a decoy.
Nathan accessed the encrypted family cloud. Sarah’s home system remained offline, but the living-room camera retained a dormant backup channel.
He entered the password from her note.
LILYSEESTRUTH.
A single archived clip appeared.
The video began at 11:34 p.m.
Sarah stood in the living room holding Eli while Noah slept in a basket. Marcus entered with Caleb Ward and Evelyn Crane.
Marcus placed a document on the table.
“Sign the trust release.”
Sarah refused.
Evelyn raised her phone and began recording.
Marcus smiled.
“Good. Look angry.”
He overturned a chair and broke a lamp.
Then he grabbed Sarah’s wrist and forced her hand toward the papers.
The video contained no audio after that moment.
Someone had disabled the microphone.
But the images were clear.
Lily appeared on the stairs.
Marcus saw her and changed immediately.
He released Sarah, knelt, and opened his arms as though nothing had happened.
Lily backed away.
Sarah looked toward the camera.
Then toward the mantel.
She knew the red bird was recording.
At 11:42, Caleb pulled the camera from the wall.
The feed ended.
Nathan preserved the clip on three separate drives.
The gate shook again.
This time, the hinges split.
Marcus and the two men entered the snowy driveway.
Then Nathan’s satellite phone rang.
Sarah’s number appeared.
He answered.
A man spoke.
