His hair was silver now. A scar crossed his jaw. But Nathan recognized the rigid posture, the restrained gestures, and the expression that treated every room as property.
The greenhouse camera carried live audio.
“Marcus has compromised the mission,” Elias said. “Release Sarah and the children to my recovery team.”
Nathan laughed once.
“You sent the man who terrorized them.”
“I sent a protector who became corrupted.”
“You kept renewing his authority.”
“To observe the extent of the corruption.”
“You used my sister as bait.”
“I preserved evidence.”
The words sounded exactly like Elias.
Cold language covering a human body.
Sarah stepped toward the screen.
“You placed Marcus’s donor sample in my fertility treatment.”
Elias did not deny it.
“The Mercer trust required secure biological continuity.”
“You designed Lily before I knew him.”
“I ensured her inheritance could not be challenged by outside bloodlines.”
Lily hid against Sarah.
Nathan’s anger became almost impossible to contain.
“You speak about children like corporate assets.”
“I speak about what protects them after we are gone.”
“You were not gone.”
Elias looked toward Rosa.
“You failed to maintain Nathan’s trust.”
Rosa’s face hardened.
“I stopped working for you years ago.”
“No one stops working for Continuity. They only stop receiving instructions.”
The founder system remained embedded in every device, legal order, medical file, and security network connected to Mercer Dynamics.
Elias had watched the house through old access points.
He knew Marcus was forcing Sarah toward a trust transfer.
He allowed it to continue because exposing Marcus required a visible act that could defeat the forged custody orders.
Lily’s blizzard escape became that act.
“You expected a seven-year-old to drag two babies four miles?” Nathan asked.
“No.”
“But you watched.”
“The storm disabled several routes.”
“You could have opened the gate before she arrived.”
Elias did not answer.
That silence exposed the truth.
He had wanted to see whether Lily could complete the route.
The child had become another Continuity test.
Sarah moved toward the safe-room door.
Nathan stopped her.
“I’m not going to him.”
“Then where?”
“Anywhere outside Dad’s system.”
There was no obvious place.
Marcus controlled the house above.
Elias controlled the greenhouse and rescue aircraft.
The court order named Nathan a kidnapper.
The local roads were impassable.
Rosa examined the original trust papers.
Sarah’s revocation required independent notarization before it could freeze Marcus’s access.
The nearest authorized official was County Clerk Amanda Pierce, twelve miles away.
But the envelope contained a notarized emergency affidavit signed by a federal magistrate in Boston.
Sarah had met her secretly.
If Nathan transmitted the affidavit through an independent network, Marcus’s financial and custody authority would be suspended.
The house’s internet was compromised.
The old weather station on the ridge had an analog satellite transmitter Elias no longer controlled.
Nathan could reach it through a maintenance tunnel beneath the property.
Marcus knew the main tunnel.
He might not know about the secondary shaft Claire helped Nathan construct after Elias’s death.
Nathan prepared to leave.
This time, Sarah did not ask him to stay.
“I’ll hold the safe room.”
Rosa gave him the recorder containing Claire’s statement.
“If you transmit this with the affidavit, Elias loses the protection of the old death record.”
Nathan placed the evidence inside his coat.
Lily reached for his hand.
“Uncle Nathan, the monster knows the tunnel.”
“Which monster?”
“Grandpa.”
Nathan stared.
“You’ve seen him before?”
Lily nodded.
“Mommy took us to the greenhouse last summer. Grandpa said I had to pretend he was dead or Marcus would hurt the babies.”
Sarah looked horrified.
“I never took her there.”
Lily insisted it happened.
She described the red benches, broken fountain, and a silver watch Elias wore.
Someone had brought Lily to Elias without Sarah’s knowledge.
The person Lily remembered driving was Rosa.
Rosa went pale.
“I never took her.”
Another false memory?
Another hidden trip?
Or another person using Rosa’s face and identity?
The safe-room camera replayed archived footage from the previous summer.
Rosa entered the house holding Lily’s hand.
At the same moment, real Rosa appeared on a separate camera inside Nathan’s kitchen.
