Chapter 4 - Sarah’s VoiceNathan kept the caller talking while Rosa traced the signal through the house’s emergency communications console.

“Let me hear her.”

A pause.

Then Sarah’s voice came through.

“Nathan?”

She sounded weak.

“Where are you?”

“Don’t open the—”

The line struck flesh.

Sarah gasped.

Marcus returned.

“Ten minutes.”

“If she dies, you lose the trust.”

“I already control the trust.”

“Not with her revocation papers.”

Silence.

Marcus had not known what the envelope contained.

Nathan continued.

“Sarah signed an emergency guardianship transfer. She documented your loans. She preserved the living-room video.”

Marcus’s breathing changed.

“You’re bluffing.”

“I watched you force her toward the papers.”

Outside, Caleb and the second man moved toward the house’s eastern wall.

Marcus remained near the damaged gate with his phone raised.

Nathan lowered his voice.

“If you kill her, every document goes to federal investigators.”

“That depends on whether you survive the storm.”

The call ended.

Rosa found only a partial location.

The signal came from somewhere within two miles.

“Marcus may not have Sarah with him,” she said.

“He has access to her phone.”

“And someone forced her to speak.”

Nathan examined the exterior cameras.

Marcus’s black Range Rover stood near the gate. The ambulance remained outside. The false sheriff’s SUV had disappeared from view.

It could be carrying Sarah.

Lily sat upright beneath the blankets.

“Mommy’s in the old glass house.”

Nathan looked at her.

“What glass house?”

“Where Grandpa grew tomatoes.”

The Mercer family once owned a greenhouse lower on the mountain. It had been abandoned after Elias died.

Two miles from Nathan’s home.

Exactly within the phone’s signal range.

Marcus knew the property because Elias had taken him there during his first visit to the family years earlier.

That memory bothered Nathan.

Marcus claimed he met Sarah at a charity dinner seven years ago.

Elias had died eight years ago.

They should never have met.

Nathan asked Rosa to remain with the children while he prepared to reach the greenhouse through the rear snowmobile trail.

She blocked the equipment-room door.

“No.”

“Sarah is down there.”

“And Lily, Eli, and Noah are here.”

“The house can hold.”

“Against people using your father’s access codes?”

Nathan looked toward the monitor.

Caleb reached a concealed maintenance panel beneath the eastern wall.

He opened it without searching.

Marcus knew the house in detail.

Rosa continued.

“You leave, and you give them exactly what they want: one adult between three children and an armed team.”

“What do you suggest?”

“Bring Sarah to us without leaving.”

Nathan activated the greenhouse’s old environmental system through the Mercer land network.

The property had no electricity registered, yet a temperature reading appeared.

Sixty-eight degrees.

Someone had restored power.

He opened the irrigation controls and triggered the fire-suppression alarm.

The greenhouse camera came online.

Sarah sat tied to a chair between rows of dead vines.

Blood marked one side of her face, but she was conscious.

Evelyn Crane stood beside her.

The false social worker removed her white coat and revealed a handgun.

When the alarm sounded, Evelyn looked toward the ceiling.

Sarah looked too.

She knew Nathan had found her.

Nathan activated the greenhouse doors.

The front lock released.

Sarah drove her shoulder into Evelyn, knocking the weapon sideways. The camera shook as they struggled.

Then the feed died.

Lily screamed from the couch.

The inner monitor showed Marcus placing a device against the house’s eastern wall.

The security system flashed:

THERMAL BREACH DETECTED.

Nathan had seconds to choose.

Open the underground safe room and move the children—

or keep monitoring the only chance Sarah had to escape.

Then the greenhouse phone called again.

This time Sarah was speaking without Marcus.

“Nathan, don’t come for me. Marcus didn’t marry me for the trust.”

“Why, then?”

Sarah’s next words arrived through broken static.

“Dad sent him.”

👉 Sarah confirmed the impossible truth: Marcus had entered her life on orders from their father, who was supposed to have been dead before they ever met.
