Chapter 6 - The Father on the CertificateSarah saw Lily through the safe-room camera.
Her expression broke.
“Baby, don’t listen to him.”
Marcus pushed the gun harder against her back.
“Tell her.”
Sarah closed her eyes.
Years earlier, before marrying Daniel Bennett, Sarah underwent fertility treatment after doctors told her she might never conceive naturally.
The clinic used a donor sample.
The file identified the donor only by number.
Sarah became pregnant with Lily.
Daniel accepted the child as his own and signed the birth certificate.
Four years later, after Daniel died in a climbing accident, Marcus entered Sarah’s life.
She did not know he was the donor until six months before Lily reached Nathan’s gate.
Marcus discovered the clinic records first.
“He said it proved we were meant to be a family,” Sarah said.
“You married the mother of your biological child without telling her?” Nathan demanded.
Marcus smiled.
“I didn’t know at first.”
Rosa did not believe him.
Continuity operated the clinic.
Elias could have selected Marcus’s sample deliberately, creating a blood connection between the assigned protector and Sarah’s future child.
A permanent reason for Marcus to remain near the Mercer heirs.
Nathan looked toward Lily.
She had become an instrument before birth.
Sarah continued.
“When I found the clinic file, I began investigating Continuity. That’s when I found the loans and the old custody cases.”
Marcus’s attorney network had removed children from three previous women connected to wealthy families. One died in an apparent accident. One disappeared after being declared mentally incompetent. One lived under another identity.
Marcus called them failed assignments.
Sarah called them victims.
“The twins?” Nathan asked.
“They’re mine and Marcus’s,” Sarah said.
Marcus nodded.
“All three children are mine.”
“Children are not property.”
“They are the Mercer succession.”
Elias’s trust required direct biological descendants connected to approved family guardians. By fathering Sarah’s children, Marcus embedded himself inside the succession structure.
If Sarah died, he would not appear to be an outsider taking control.
He would be the grieving biological father.
The plan had begun years before the marriage.
Nathan looked at Rosa.
“You knew the fertility clinic was part of Continuity.”
“I knew it existed. I didn’t know Elias used it on Sarah.”
Marcus lost patience.
“Open the door.”
“No.”
“Then watch what happens to your sister.”
Evelyn raised the gun.
Sarah suddenly drove her heel into Evelyn’s shin. She twisted away as Nathan triggered the safe room’s internal fire alarm.
The house lights strobed.
Rosa opened the emergency ventilation release, filling the hallway with thick suppression mist.
Through the camera, Nathan saw Sarah run toward the foyer.
Marcus followed.
Evelyn fired once.
The bullet struck the wall.
Lily screamed.
Nathan opened the safe room long enough to pull Sarah inside as she reached the pantry.
Marcus grabbed her coat.
Nathan slammed the reinforced door against his arm.
Marcus released her.
The lock engaged manually.
Sarah collapsed beside the twins.
Lily climbed into her arms.
For several seconds, no one spoke.
Then Sarah looked at Nathan.
“The papers are incomplete.”
“What else is there?”
“Marcus wasn’t the only operative Dad placed in our lives.”
Her eyes moved toward Rosa.
Nathan turned.
Rosa did not deny it.
“I was assigned to you,” she said.
“By Elias?”
“Yes.”
“After my wife died?”
“Before you met her.”
Nathan stepped away.
Rosa had lived in his home for six years. She knew every room, every code, every weakness.
She had helped save Lily.
She had also lied about nearly everything.
Sarah opened the envelope’s innermost fold.
A list of Continuity assignments appeared.
Marcus was assigned to Sarah.
Rosa was assigned to Nathan.
Beside Rosa’s name was another instruction:
If Nathan discovers founder operations, initiate emotional containment through the children.
Nathan looked toward the twins.
Rosa’s face filled with horror.
“I never saw that order.”
A second handwriting appeared beneath it.
