A medical line ran beneath her sleeve. Her face looked older, but not by four full years. Long periods of sedation had slowed the visible passage of time.
Nathan lifted her from the storage compartment.
Jacob followed closely, holding the blue music box.
Claire opened her eyes when she heard it.
“Nathan?”
He nearly collapsed.
“You’re alive.”
She looked toward Jacob.
“My baby.”
The boy climbed into her arms.
No one attempted to explain four stolen years in a garage during a blizzard.
There was no language large enough.
Rosa removed the medical line and found a tracking port attached beneath the adhesive.
Claire had been moved from a Continuity facility that evening.
Elias intended to bring her to the greenhouse with the children.
“Why?” Nathan asked.
Claire struggled to stay conscious.
“The final transfer.”
Continuity’s founder authority could pass only if Elias assembled all verified heirs and guardians for a recorded family-reunification event.
The ceremony would transfer Mercer Dynamics, the trust, and the protected-identity network to a successor.
Elias intended to choose one person to control everything.
Nathan.
Sarah.
Marcus.
Or one of the children when they became adults.
Marcus believed fathering Mercer heirs would make him the obvious successor.
Elias never promised that.
He only allowed Marcus to believe it.
Claire had spent years inside a protected medical residence after surviving the crash. Elias told her Nathan had died during a retaliatory attack and that Jacob would be killed if she tried to leave.
“He showed me your funeral,” she whispered.
Nathan had never had a funeral.
Elias fabricated one.
The same method separated every family.
False death.
False danger.
False protection.
Real control.
Claire recognized Rosa and immediately recoiled.
“She brought the medication.”
Rosa stepped back.
“That was Elena.”
Claire stared more carefully.
“Yes.”
The twin substitution had made resistance nearly impossible. Claire never knew which sister entered her room.
Elena sometimes helped her.
Rosa’s face became hopeful.
“Where is she now?”
“Working against Elias.”
Nathan remembered Elena disappearing with the heir list after the tunnel explosion.
She may have taken it to destroy Continuity.
Or to control the founder transfer herself.
Outside, Marcus and Elias continued their confrontation.
Sheriff Hart attempted to negotiate.
Then a shot rang out.
The gate camera shook.
Marcus fell behind the Range Rover, wounded but moving.
Elias entered the sheriff’s vehicle.
Hart drove toward the greenhouse.
Nathan understood.
The confrontation had been another diversion.
Elias no longer needed Marcus if Claire and the heirs were already inside Nathan’s house.
He would activate the reunification remotely.
The hallway screens illuminated.

Claire Mercer.

Noah Vale.
Emily Vale.
Jacob Mercer.
Ava Mercer.
Rosa Delgado appeared beneath a different heading:
ASSIGNED GUARDIAN.
The system requested identity confirmation.
Claire looked at the screen.
“If everyone is verified inside one secured residence, the transfer begins automatically.”
“How do we stop it?”
“Someone has to reject Mercer family status.”
Sarah tried first.
The screen refused.
Biological identity could not be revoked.
Nathan selected rejection.
The system required a legal successor.
Then Jacob touched the screen beside his name.
The display recognized him.
YOUNGEST MERCER HEIR VERIFIED.
A countdown began.
Ten minutes until founder transfer.
The house entered permanent lockdown.
The garage closed.
Exterior shutters sealed.
Even Elias’s officers could not enter now.
The family had become trapped inside the machine designed to protect them.
Claire held Jacob’s face.
“Your grandfather told you to touch that?”
The boy nodded.
“He said it would make Mommy wake up.”
Elias had used the child to begin the transfer.
Nathan searched the system for the recipient.
The designated successor appeared.
Not Nathan.
Not Sarah.
Not Marcus.
ROSA DELGADO.
Rosa stared at her name.
“I never agreed to this.”
Claire’s expression changed.
“Elias didn’t place you here to watch Nathan.”
