Chapter 7 - Sarah’s SignatureSarah stared at the page.

“I didn’t sign that.”
Nathan placed it beneath the safe-room light.
The signature looked genuine.
It included the long downward stroke Sarah used only on legal documents.
She touched the date.
Eight years earlier.
Three weeks after Elias’s supposed death.
“At that time, I was in a hospital after Dad’s memorial,” she said.
Rosa remembered.
Sarah suffered a breakdown during the funeral and spent five days inside a private Mercer medical facility.
Continuity controlled the facility.
Someone could have captured her biometric signature while she was medicated.
Or Sarah had signed something she no longer remembered.
Marcus’s voice returned through the speaker.
“Ask Sarah what she promised our father.”
Sarah covered Lily’s ears.
Nathan pressed the intercom.
“What promise?”
“She agreed that family survival mattered more than individual freedom.”
Sarah shouted, “I was twenty-eight and grieving!”
“So you remember.”
The safe room fell silent.
Sarah admitted Elias had recruited her shortly before his death.
He showed her threats against Mercer Dynamics and warned that Nathan’s refusal to remain inside the company made him vulnerable.
Sarah agreed to a limited protection plan.
Rosa would take a job near Nathan.
She would report only credible threats.
“I never authorized emotional containment,” Sarah said.
“But you authorized surveillance.”
“Yes.”
Nathan felt the betrayal settle slowly.
Sarah had criticized Marcus for entering her life as an assignment.
She had placed Rosa inside Nathan’s life for the same reason.
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
“You hated Dad’s control.”
“So you controlled me quietly.”
“I thought I was keeping you alive.”
Rosa lowered her eyes.
“I reported to Sarah for eleven months.”
“What did you report?”
“Security breaches. Unknown vehicles. Changes in your routines.”
“Anything personal?”
Rosa hesitated.
Nathan’s anger rose.
“Anything about my wife?”
“Yes.”
Nathan’s wife, Claire, died four years earlier after a winter car accident. Rosa had been the first medical responder at the scene.
Officially, she happened to be nearby.
In truth, Continuity sent her after the vehicle’s emergency system transmitted an alert.
Claire remained conscious long enough to accuse someone of forcing her off the road.
Rosa omitted the statement from the official report.
“Who did she name?” Nathan asked.
Rosa looked toward Sarah.
“Marcus.”
Sarah stood abruptly.
“You never told me.”
“Elias ordered the statement sealed.”
“He was dead.”
“The order came through founder authority.”
Nathan’s hands curled into fists.
Marcus had destroyed more than Sarah’s life.
He may have killed Claire.
Nathan wanted to open the door and tear the truth from him.
Rosa blocked him.
“That is what he wants.”
“Get away from me.”
“Claire’s statement is preserved.”
“Where?”
“In the safe-room medical cabinet.”
Rosa removed a false panel.
Behind emergency bandages sat a small recorder inside an evidence sleeve.
Nathan pressed play.
Wind and distant sirens filled the audio.
Claire’s voice was weak but clear.
“Black SUV… Marcus Vale… he said Nathan was becoming difficult to manage.”
Nathan stopped the recording.
Sarah began crying.
Marcus had killed Claire not because of a personal conflict, but because she interfered with Continuity’s control over Nathan.
Then another voice appeared on the recording.
A male voice near the ambulance said:
“Make sure Nathan never hears this.”
Nathan recognized it.
His father.
Elias had been present at Claire’s crash four years after his own supposed death.
Marcus spoke through the safe-room speaker.
“You finally heard him.”
Nathan looked toward the ceiling.
“Where is Elias?”
“Closer than you think.”
The house monitor changed.
A live camera showed the abandoned greenhouse.
Elias Mercer stood beneath the broken glass roof, older but unmistakably alive.
Beside him waited a helicopter crew preparing for the storm to clear.
He looked into the camera.

“Nathan, your father is coming home.”
👉 Claire’s final recording placed Marcus and Elias at her fatal crash, proving Nathan’s father had remained alive while directing the destruction of his family.
