The woman beside Lily had her face, her gray-streaked hair, and the slight limp caused by her old spinal injury.
Even Nathan initially believed he was looking at the same person.
Then Sarah noticed the handbag.
Real Rosa always carried weight on her left side to protect her injury.
The second woman carried it on the right.
“Who is she?” Nathan asked.
Rosa sat down.
“My sister.”
Rosa had an identical twin named Elena Delgado.
Elena joined Continuity before Rosa. She specialized in family insertion—appearing temporarily as household staff, nurses, attorneys, or relatives during high-risk operations.
When Rosa left the program, Elena remained.
Elias used their resemblance to make witnesses doubt timelines and memories.
Rosa claimed Elena died during an operation in Arizona six years earlier.
No body was recovered.
Another false death.
Another Continuity ghost.
“Elena took Lily to the greenhouse,” Sarah said.
“And Elias made her believe it was Rosa,” Nathan answered.
Lily had trusted the wrong woman because the system designed the deception around a familiar face.
Nathan checked the current house cameras.
One view showed Rosa standing beside the safe-room medical cabinet.
He turned.
Real Rosa stood near the bed.
The camera feed was not live.
It had been replaced with a loop.
Someone was moving through the house using her appearance again.
Nathan entered the secondary shaft before Marcus could discover it.
The tunnel climbed toward the ridge beneath layers of rock and frozen soil. He carried a compact radio, Claire’s recording, Sarah’s affidavit, and the original trust papers.
Halfway through, a light appeared behind him.
Someone followed.
Nathan raised a flare gun.
Rosa’s face emerged from the darkness.
“Elena?” he asked.
The woman smiled.
“You always were slower than Sarah.”
Elena wore Rosa’s coat and carried a handgun.
She had entered the house through the eastern breach while Marcus created the diversion.
“Are you working for Marcus or Elias?”
“Those are not the only sides.”
She ordered Nathan to surrender the envelope.
He refused.
Elena claimed Continuity had fractured into three groups.
Elias wanted to preserve the original family-control system.
Marcus wanted the Mercer trust and private network.
A third faction wanted to release every protected identity, financial account, and hidden witness to the public.
Elena belonged to the third.
“Why take Lily to Elias?”
“To prove he was alive.”
“You used a child.”
“I needed a witness nobody would accuse of working for me.”
“People accuse children of lying every day.”
“That’s why I brought her back before Sarah noticed.”
Nathan tightened his grip on the flare gun.
“You let her believe Rosa took her.”
“I expected the memory to remain buried.”
“Children are not evidence containers.”
Elena’s expression changed.
“Then why are you carrying Sarah’s truth inside your coat while leaving her behind?”
The accusation did not make them equal.
Nathan was trying to save them.
Yet every adult in the story believed purpose excused risk.
Elena revealed the weather-station transmitter had been disabled.
Elias anticipated Nathan’s route.
But she possessed another satellite device capable of sending the files.
In exchange, she wanted the complete Continuity heir list from Sarah’s envelope.
Nathan had not seen such a list.
Elena opened a hidden fold inside the legal papers.
Names appeared.
Lily.
Eli.
Noah.
Emily Vale.
Jacob Mercer.
Nathan recognized neither of the final two children.
Elena pointed to Jacob.
“Your son.”
Nathan stared.
“I don’t have a son.”
“Claire was pregnant when Marcus forced her car off the road.”
Nathan’s world narrowed.
Claire had not told him.
Or Continuity prevented her.
Elena said the baby survived and was removed from the hospital before Nathan arrived.
Elias classified him as a protected heir.
“Where is he?”
“Send me the list, and I’ll tell you.”
Nathan stepped closer.
“You are bargaining with my child.”
“I am bargaining with the only thing Elias values enough to trade.”
A gunshot echoed through the tunnel.
Elena’s weapon fell.
Rosa stood behind her holding the flare gun she had taken from the safe room.
Nathan looked between the identical sisters.
