Chapter 12 - The Sheriff at the DoorSheriff Hart stopped outside the damaged gate.

His radio transmission was calm.

“Nathan Mercer, we have confirmation of several endangered minors inside your residence. Open the property for emergency evacuation.”

Nathan displayed Sarah’s affidavit and the federal acknowledgment number.

Hart claimed the order had not reached his department.

“That is convenient,” Sarah said.

Hart requested to speak with Lily alone.

Nathan refused.

Elias remained inside the vehicle, watching the house through the windshield.

Ava hid behind Rosa.

“He makes us choose new names.”

Nathan asked whether Hart had ever harmed her.

“No. He takes children to the papers.”

The sheriff’s role was administrative.

He transported Continuity children to sealed hearings where judges approved new identities without biological families present.

The procedure appeared legal because every file included medical reports, guardian statements, and emergency findings.

Most were forged.

Marcus supplied the crisis.

Evelyn supplied family assessments.

Hart supplied law-enforcement confirmation.

Judge Voss supplied orders.

Elias supplied purpose.

Nathan opened an audio channel.

“Sheriff, the ambulance contains children moved under false identities.”

Hart answered carefully.

“The minors are protected witnesses.”

“From whom?”

“People who may kill them if their locations become public.”

“And their families?”

“Some families are the threat.”

Nathan looked toward Emily, Jacob, and Ava.

Some Continuity placements may have saved children.

That truth had become the shield behind which every crime hid.

Elias finally took the radio.

“Open the gate, Nathan.”

“No.”

“You have children requiring medical care.”

“Send an independent rescue team without Hart.”

“The storm does not care about your moral performance.”

“Neither did you when Lily crossed four miles.”

Elias’s face tightened.

“I did not order that route.”

“You watched.”

“I was locating Sarah.”

“You were testing Lily.”

Elias did not deny it.

Dr. Helen Moore, a physician from the county rescue team, approached the gate on foot and showed her credentials to the camera. Nathan verified them through a federal registry.

She appeared legitimate.

Rosa advised allowing only the doctor through the pedestrian entrance while all officers remained outside.

Nathan opened the narrow passage remotely.

Helen entered carrying emergency equipment.

She treated Lily and examined the babies. Eli’s breathing had become shallow. Noah’s temperature remained dangerously low.

“They need hospital care now,” she said.

“Can the children go with you without Hart?”

Helen hesitated.

“The sheriff controls transport.”

Nathan saw the trap.

Medical necessity would force the children into Continuity’s vehicles.

Sarah held Eli tighter.

“We can use Nathan’s snowcat.”

The armored tracked vehicle in the lower garage could reach the main highway.

But Marcus had entered the house’s systems.

The garage might be compromised.

Rosa checked it.

The snowcat remained functional.

Nathan prepared to move everyone.

Helen opened her medical bag.

A silver wolf pin lay inside.

Ava screamed.

Rosa seized Helen’s wrist before she reached the syringe beneath the equipment.

The doctor struggled.

Nathan pulled the bag away.

Inside were sedatives, blank transfer forms, and hospital bracelets with new names already printed for the children.

Helen was another Continuity operative.

She had been sent to make the removal look medically necessary.

Nathan forced her into the empty utility room.

Outside, Sheriff Hart demanded entry.

Then Marcus appeared behind his Range Rover carrying Evelyn’s gun.

He shouted toward Elias.

“You told me the children were mine.”

Elias stepped from the sheriff’s vehicle.

“They were your responsibility.”

“You used me to create heirs.”

“I gave you a place inside the family.”

“You planned to discard me.”

Elias looked at the house.

“You discarded yourself.”

Marcus raised the weapon toward him.

Every officer at the gate aimed at Marcus.

Nathan watched three sides of Continuity turn against one another.

Sarah opened the snowcat garage.

The vehicle’s engine started.

Then Jacob pointed toward its rear storage compartment.

“Grandpa puts sleeping people in there.”

Nathan opened it.

Claire Mercer lay inside.

Alive.

👉 The snowcat meant to carry the children to safety concealed Nathan’s supposedly dead wife, turning the escape vehicle into another Continuity prison.
