Chapter 15 - The Envelope’s Second SkinThe state police entered Nathan’s property after dawn.

The blizzard had weakened, but snow still buried the lower roads. Officers secured Marcus, Evelyn, Sheriff Hart, and the false rescue workers for questioning.
No one was shown in final custody.
Attorneys challenged jurisdiction before the first formal interview began.
Elias’s helicopter disappeared beyond the northern ridge.
Emily’s tracker stopped transmitting above the Canadian border.
Elena remained missing.
The weather station had burned from within.
Sarah sat beside Lily and the twins while doctors treated them in Nathan’s living room. Eli and Noah would recover, though both needed immediate hospital monitoring as soon as the road opened.
Lily’s temperature stabilized.
Her hands remained wrapped.
She refused to sleep unless Nathan stayed where she could see him.
Claire rested on the opposite couch with Jacob curled beside her.
Four stolen years stood between Nathan and his wife.
Love had survived.
Trust had not yet returned.
Rosa moved through the room helping the doctors while police watched her carefully. Her name had appeared as Continuity’s planned successor. Even after refusing, she remained connected to systems no investigator fully understood.
Marcus sat in the marble foyer with a pressure bandage around his shoulder.
He looked toward Lily.
“Can I speak to her?”
Sarah stepped between them.
“No.”
“I’m her father.”
“You are the man who made her cross a mountain in a blizzard.”
Marcus lowered his eyes.
He had lost financial access, founder authority, and control over the custody order.
That did not erase his biological connection.
It did not create a right to forgiveness.
Nathan returned to the plastic-wrapped envelope.
The outer pages were wet from melting snow. The plastic had begun separating along one edge.
He noticed another layer beneath the original seam.
A second skin.
Sarah had sewn two packets into Lily’s coat.
The first was meant to stop Marcus.
The second was addressed in unfamiliar handwriting.
FOR NATHAN AFTER ELIAS RUNS.
Sarah stared.
“I didn’t put that there.”
Lily remembered a woman kneeling beside her before Sarah pushed the sled through the laundry door.
The woman wore Sarah’s coat and had Rosa’s face.
Elena.
She had inserted the second packet moments before Lily entered the storm.
Nathan opened it under police cameras.
Inside was a photograph of Elias standing beside Marcus eighteen years earlier.
Marcus was barely twenty.
Elias held a newborn.
On the back, Elena had written:
Continuity did not select Marcus because of Sarah. It created Marcus for the Mercer family.
A birth certificate identified Marcus’s mother as Helen Vale.
His father:
Elias Mercer.
Sarah stopped breathing.
Marcus looked toward the paper from across the foyer.
“No.”
Nathan read it again.
Marcus was Elias’s son.
Nathan and Sarah’s half-brother.
Lily’s biological father was also her mother’s half-brother.
Sarah staggered backward in horror.
Marcus stood despite the officers around him.
“I didn’t know.”
Rosa examined the document.
“The certificate could be forged.”
Nathan agreed.
Continuity had manipulated birth records before.
But the photograph was old, physical, and carried Elias’s handwritten date.
Marcus’s entire placement near Sarah gained a more monstrous purpose.
Elias had created a hidden son, trained him inside Continuity, and later positioned him beside a daughter who did not know they shared blood.
The children were not only heirs.
They were products of a controlled family line.
Sarah clutched Lily.
“Dad knew.”
Marcus stared at the babies.
For the first time, his confidence disappeared completely.
The second packet contained a DNA laboratory order.
Samples from Elias, Marcus, Sarah, Lily, and the twins had been tested years earlier.
The report remained sealed.
Nathan opened it.
Marcus was not Elias’s biological son.
The birth certificate was false.
But another relationship appeared.
Marcus shared an immediate-family match with Claire.
Nathan turned toward his wife.
She stared at the report.
“I don’t have a brother.”
The DNA result identified them as twins.
Claire had grown up believing she was an only child adopted after a hospital fire. Marcus believed his parents died in a car crash when he was six.
Continuity had separated them, trained Marcus, and later sent him against the family Claire married into.
Elias had not created Marcus biologically.
He had created him psychologically.
Elena’s note continued:
Elias chose Claire for Nathan and Marcus for Sarah. The marriages were designed as paired access points. If one operative failed, the other family would still produce heirs.
Nathan looked at Claire.
Their meeting at a winter fundraiser had never been accidental.
Sarah’s charity dinner had never been accidental.
The relationships, births, trusts, and tragedies had been positioned years before any of them understood the board.
The final page contained coordinates.
A facility beneath an abandoned hydroelectric station north of the border.
Beside the coordinates was one sentence:
This is where Elias keeps the children who fail reunification. Jacob was not the only Mercer child removed after birth.
Nathan searched the heir list.
A name appeared that had not been visible earlier.
SOPHIE MERCER—AGE SIX.
Claire touched the page.
“I gave birth only once.”
Nathan looked toward Marcus.
He shook his head.
Sarah denied knowing any child by that name.
Then Lily spoke from the couch.
“I know Sophie.”
Every adult turned.
“She was with Grandpa at the greenhouse. He said she was the good Lily.”
Sarah’s face drained.
“What does that mean?”
Lily began crying.
“He said if I didn’t follow the sled path, Sophie would come home instead of me.”
The security monitor beeped.
A live connection opened from the hydroelectric station.
Emily sat inside a bright room beside a little girl who looked almost exactly like Lily.
Same hair.
Same eyes.
Same age.
Elias entered the frame.
He rested one hand on the second girl’s shoulder.
“Nathan, the envelope exposed Marcus exactly as planned.”
Nathan stepped toward the screen.
“You sent Elena to hide it.”
“I needed Marcus stripped of authority before the next phase.”
“You let Lily nearly freeze.”
“I knew she would reach you.”
“You could not know that.”
Elias smiled.
“I knew because Sophie completed the same route last winter.”
The second girl looked toward the camera.
Lily moved closer to the monitor.
They stared at each other like reflections.
Elias continued.
“One child was raised by Sarah. One was raised by Continuity. Now we determine which one can survive without us.”
The feed began closing.
Nathan struck the emergency call control.
“Elias!”
His father paused.
“You called Marcus the monster because Sarah needed you angry enough to open the envelope.”
Elias looked down at Sophie.
“But Marcus was never the monster.”
The little girl raised her sleeve.
A Mercer security key was strapped around her wrist.
Elias’s final words reached the house before the screen went black.
“He was only the gatekeeper.”
